Update: Melinda Henneberger has additional details from eyewitnesses.

    From HuffPo:

WICHITA, Kansas -- Dr. George Tiller, a Kansas doctor whose clinic received national attention for performing late-term abortions, was shot to death as he entered his Wichita church on Sunday.

"Members of the congregation who were inside the sanctuary at the time of the shooting were being kept inside the church by police," the Wichita Eagle reported, "and those arriving were being ushered into the parking lot."

As of this writing, the police are still seeking a suspect in a powder blue Ford Taurus with Kansas license plate 225 BAB.

Already, the murder of Dr. Tiller has re-ignited the culture war surrounding reproductive freedom, with self-proclaimed "culture warrior" Bill O'Reilly receiving an early salvo:

O'Reilly calls Tiller the "so-called baby killer" below. He calls his outfit a "death-mill, which is exactly what it is":

There is sure to be much more sparring over this issue in the days ahead, but I would remind pro-choicers that the acts of an extremist do not constitute an argument against legitimate opposition to abortion. This incident points up the need to cool the debate, not overheat it.

Update: According to KAKE-TV, a suspect is in custody:
Sedgwick County 911 dispatchers are confirming that the Johnson County Sheriff's Department has arrested a possible suspect in Dr. George Tiller's murder. A car matching the description of the vehicle wanted in the killing was pulled over near Gardner, KS.

Kansas City television stations report the stop was made along I-35 near Gardner, south of Kansas City.
