On May 27th, Newt Gingrich wrote on his Twitter feed, "White man racist nominee would be forced to withdraw. Latina woman racist should also withdraw."
Today, Gingrich backs away from those comments on his website, Newt.org:
"My initial reaction was strong and direct -- perhaps too strong and too direct. The sentiment struck me as racist and I said so. Since then, some who want to have an open and honest consideration of Judge Sotomayor's fitness to serve on the nation's highest court have been critical of my word choice.
"With these critics who want to have an honest conversation, I agree. The word "racist" should not have been applied to Judge Sotomayor as a person, even if her words themselves are unacceptable (a fact which both President Obama and his Press Secretary, Robert Gibbs, have since admitted)."
In his essay today, Gingrich does stick by his original theory, however, that Sotomayor relies on identity politics more than the rule of law to decide her cases, linking Sotomayor's speech, "A Latina Judge's Voice," as evidence.
Gingrich's original use of the word "racist" hung in the air on Capitol Hill yesterday, with his fellow Republicans denouncing the heated language, and Democrats saying attacks on Sotomayor, including calling her a racist, leave them no choice but to speed her confirmation process so that she can respond to the charges against her in public hearings.

It doesn't matter how much the far right howls, Sotomayor is a lock. All their wild shooting does is make themselves look goofy and weak. Maybe, that's what they are.

#1. No one should ever enter the political arena who has a thin skin! #2. Male, female, ethinicity, cultural identity, or amount of melanin in one's body, are not requisites for being nominated or confirmed for any position/job in our government. Being human, having integrity, and having the proper credentials are. #3. What you say does come back to haunt you. #4. The written word has the same effect as #3. #5. I believe neither Newt or Sotomayor are to be trusted. Their past tells more about them than the present.

Since she is in favor of promoting man based on the color of his skin and not the merits of his work, she is a racist ,but since she is not white , I guess that's okay .

Had a Southern white male nominee for the Supreme court said that "I would hope that a wise Southern man with the richness of his experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a black woman who hasn't lived that life", that Southern white male would be labeled a racist misogynist. What makes Sotomayor's comments any less racist? A supreme court justice is to apply the constitution, not give preferential treatment to anyone based upon their gender or race. Such double standards sicken me.

You mean when the perceived double standard is on the other side it sickens you. Did you yell and whine when Newt was going after President Clinton while behaving the same way? I bet not.

I agree. Newt Gingrich is the arch-deacon of low slash & burn politics. He invented the nasty, personal tone of political debate today, and most of his fellow conservative Contract for America congressman are in jail, like Duke Cunningham. Watching him try to backpedal this is pretty funny. The fact that he is one of the few leaders the Repukes still have is funnier still.

rascism is still strong in this country it is sad to say. However the blame does not fall squarely on the white community. Hispanics, Asian-Americans, and African-Americans are to blame as well. Just because you are not White does not mean you can't be a rascist.

"Racism" seems to be the word of choice to demonstrate, in the most pronounced way, the fact that our society in general has become one of "whose on top" instead of being mutually respectful of all. As they say we all have a cross to bear but today we have created an environment of who has it the worst instead of how well we can all do. No one can fix our problems accept for ourselves so Americans get off your tushes and become the best you can be and hope for equal rights for ALL! Personally I am tired of hearing EVERYONE bitch about who said what...!

Tasher, Mcgowbi,Peapers,
Please open up your Webster dictionary and read the definition of racist. In case you do not own one here is the definition:
1.a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others. 2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination. 3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.
In this country (America) land of the free and home of the brave, #2 has been the LAW of the land. Blacks were not allowed to vote, go to schools of their choice, marry people of their choice based on race, own business and the list goes on. There are inventions that we use that benefit mankind that were invented by blacks yet they had NO access to them. Dr Charles Richard Drew invented Blood Plasma the process for preseving and transporting blood for transfusion but you cannot read this in your history books, why because he was a black man. This is institutial, systemic racism that prevents the progress of a race of people. As a southern white male or any free white male or female you cannot understand it. Italians and Irish have suffered some prejudice but not the systematic prevention of a people to the pusuit of happiness as stated in the constitution. As a black educated, hardworking woman, mother of three, One graduated Phi Theta Kappa, one in high school, honer roll every semester and the other in Jr high, honor roll each semester, I am among the many NOT THE FEW. Yet my son still gets stopped at random by the police for something as idiotic as wearing a plaid shirt! What Sotomayor meant was that she would understand this based on her experience and APPLY the LAW of the constitution EVENHANDED based on the pure interpertation of the CONSTITUTION not having predjudice based on race or national origin. This had NOT been the case now or in the pass so let us at least be honest with each other. It is ONLY 40 years ago that Lyndon Johnson passed the civil rights act allowing Blacks to VOTE! DID YOU KNOW THAT THE HOUSE HAS TO VOTE TO UPHOLD THIS EVERY YEAR!!! That is RACISM.
Oh, by the way dwarecon,
President Obama is also HALF WHITE so why don't we call him WHITE? Answer: Because in America that is the LAW! (Constitution shredder)the on drop rule. Look it up.
Experts on race relations agree that up until very recently, and to some extent even today, white America held to the "one-drop" rule: if you had one drop of black blood in you--any detectable African ancestry at all--you were black. This peculiar attitude may well be unique in the world; even South Africa acknowledges the existence of people of mixed race.
