As hard as it is to imagine the party of George Bush and Karl Rove transitioning into cheerleaders at a gay pride parade, it looks like we're headed there. A recent Gallup poll shows that a majority of Americans favor openly gay and lesbian soldiers in the military. And it's not a slim majority, either.
It breaks down like this: 77 percent of moderates and 86 percent of liberals approve, in both cases an increase from the numbers five years ago. But the change among conservatives is the most dramatic. Conservatives who approve of gays in the military jumped from 46 percent in 2004 to 58 percent today.
In the words of the late Barry Goldwater, "You don't have to be straight to be in the military. You just have to be able to shoot straight."
Somewhere I've got a picture of my sister and me in our Easter best holding up a Goldwater bumper sticker. My dad, a rabid fan of minimal government, used to say, "If politicians want to go to Washington and collect a paycheck for doing absolutely nothing, that's fine with me."
How much Goldwater would have done or not done if he'd become president we'll never know. The infamous Peace, Little Girl ad branded him a war-monger, and LBJ buried him in the 1964 election.
But some of what Goldwater espoused at the time and on up to his death in 1998 sounds downright liberal by today's standards. On abortion Goldwater was pro-choice. And he said, "Everyone knows that gays have served honorably in the military since at least the time of Julius Caesar."
Goldwater would not have fit in with the party of wedge issues. In the early 1990s he told conservatives, "Do not associate my name with anything you do. You are extremists, and you've hurt the Republican party much more than the Democrats have."
Prophetic words. But there's a new wind blowing, according to the website of the gay/lesbian group known as Log Cabin Republicans.
When Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, a "new birth of freedom," was indeed given to our country. Now, more than 150 years later, the GOP has another chance to choose fairness over discrimination, equality over bigotry, hope over fear, and freedom over oppression.
The gays and lesbians I know are very active in politics. Democrats, ignore this shift in public sentiment at your peril.
Donna Trussell is a poet, fiction writer, and former film critic. Her 2008 poetry collection, What’s Right about What’s Wrong, was published by Helicon Nine... more
That is the most whimsical column I have ever read. I am stunned to see this published. I say this with all due respect, why can't I write for this blog? I actually KNOW quite a bit about politics and the ACTUAL issues of the day.
Under no circumstances will the same Republican party that produced Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan (who hated gays) and Neconservatives redefine themselves as bleeding heart advocates for gays and lesbians. That is akin to closing your eyes, clicking your heels together, "saying there's no place like home" and expecting to wake up in a bed in Kansas with Judy Garland and Toto.
Please say you meant to publish this on April Fools Day.

Ron Regan Jr. said last month on his http://airamerica.com/ronreagan radio program that Gays were always invited & attended Regan Sr's events including Cary Grant, Rock Hudson, Liza, etc and that it was NEVER an issue with Gov. or Pres. Regan.
I would certainly agree that Neoclown Falwell's ignorant support of Regan implied Regan gay bashing, but the facts as stated by his son and Nancy speak otherwise, as he privately laughed off the neoclown fools as twisted and psychotically deranged, correctly asserting that they were not to be politically or otherwise employed in his or any other administration.

Have you ever thought that the motive of letting gays in service is there is more of a chance of getting rid of them--

Ronald Reagan didn't hate gays in the least. He had MANY friends (even couples) who he and Nancy had to the White House in the early to mid 80's. You are either obtuse or a liar. You choose which one you want to be. I really don't care. But if you know so much, why would your entire post be full of falsehoods????

seems like some of these opinions are more delusional than cannabis would allow, maybe LSD. Republicans do seem desperate, Cheney-Palin is a total loser. I guess they're playing to any crowd that will listen at this point. Sadly, before any person is supported by a major political party, they have to be willing to put the party agenda ahead of the American people.

The only reason they lean to the left is because they are more accepting of them. I guaruntee that if the right would accept them there would be a lot of GAY and LESBIAN REPUBLICANS. Its a shame.

Poor poor Ronnie Reagan will he ever live up to(or down for tht matter) the myth that the disllusional right has made of him? Pundit is right Reagan had many gay friends and accepted them all. While I find Reagan the man a likeable sort, Reagan the president was a mess. We are now all living though the results of the Reagan idea's, the deregulating, the unchecked capitalism, the greed of the ultra rich. A few simple facts to drive those on the right insane.... Reagan increased the size of government..... Reagan spent more then all the presidents before him combined.... Reagan gave out a tax cut to the rich, but the very next year passed the largest peace time tax increase in our history. Reagan did not defeat the USSR, in fact most think he kept them alive longer due to his threats. One day the myth that the right calls Reagan will die........

Dear Stud - how kind of you to provide such a clear and concise statement on what you say I, a life long Republican, believe. All these years I thought that I openly supported my gay and lesbian friends - and now you tell me that I do not. When did I change (or more correctly, when did you get an insight into my soul to be able to say that I as a Republican do not and cannot advocate for and support alternative life choices).
You pompous JERK - seems to me that your narrow minded definition of what a Republican believes shows that you have accepted Democratic Party BS as fact and have not taken the time to talk with those of us who have hearts, brains and intellect and also believe that that the Democratic Party is not the cure for the problem - IT IS THE PROBLEM! Go read a few books, newspapers, magazines, etc. written by good moderate Republicans and try to see that there are many, many of us who see the whole broad spectrum and though and life and what each of us to have the opportunity to live life the way we feel we are called to live.

Did you not read in the short bio, under her commentary, that Donna Trussell is a "fiction writer". The term "tongue in cheek" probably occured to everyone with an IQ above room teperature while reading her spoof.
Have you no shame? Begging for a job, while feigning interest in the subject matter. Calling yourself Stud when your name ought be Dust. Putting on a display of the same narrow minded homophobia which has relegated the Pachydermian Party to the status of dog poop.
You are a sad relic of a bygone era, Dust. A mote caught in a whirlwind of change. A pimple on the ass of Irrelevance. A nit in a room of wits.

Actually, Ronald Reagan did not hate gays. He went against his own party over a bill in California when he was governor to ban all openly gay teachers in the state from teaching.

Stud, I'm not a Republican, or a Democrat, but you show your shallow understanding of Reagan. WHAT EVIDENCE do you have that he HATED GBLTs? REAL evidence, not imagined, the televised hatchet job you may have taken as accurate history from Hollywood, or twisted words. Bring it on, sweetie-pie. IF you knew enough about behind the scenes, Reagan did NOT HATE gays. Sorry. Try to resist the pervasive liberal propaganda more often. It will do your mind good. BTW, I'm an actual moderate, not a liberal who is tagged moderate to make them look better for an election. One source to dispel your blind, knee jerk hatred of conservatives, the GOP, and Reagan: INDEPENDENT GAY FORUM: "Reagan and Gays: A Reassessment by Dale Carpenter First published on June 10, 2004, in the Bay Area Reporter" http://www.indegayforum.org/news/show/26670.html
You might be a stud, but your "fair-mindedness" and sound study in this area (and probably more) is a dud. Take off your liberal-infested blindness.
