A new poll by
Gallup and USA Today finds that 52% of those asked to name "the main person who speaks for Republicans today" drew a blank. Further distressing for a party badly in need of attracting moderate voters, the names that did register some support are as follows:
Rush Limbaugh 13%Dick Cheney 10%
John McCain 6%
Mitt Romney came in at 1%; Sarah Palin did not make the list. Of course, this question is much easier to answer if your party happens to hold the White House: 67 percent of Democrats resoundingly responded that Barack Obama was their leader.
In another sign of continued trouble for the GOP, 33% of Republicans say they have an unfavorable view of their party.
When one considers Republican respondents only, Newt Gingrich rises to a statistical tie with Limbaugh as the head of the party (10% of the vote). Gingrich has been posturing himself for a run in 2012, as he did on Monday when he delivered the keynote address at a D.C.
party fundraiser. So, for now, he's looking like something of a front-runner.

Our New Approach to Comments
In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers –
a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around.
