Still vacationing in London, First Lady Michelle Obama celebrated daughter Sasha's 8th birthday on Wednesday by taking Sasha and her sister, Malia, to the Harry Potter movie set.
First Lady spokeswoman Semonti Mustaphi confirmed the visit to the studio, which took place mid-day. The British press was off by a day, reporting on Tuesday that the First Lady and her girls had already toured the movie studio. Why Potter? "The girls like Harry Potter," Mustaphi said, "otherwise they wouldn't go."
There have also been conflicting reports about Sasha's birthday. But Mustaphi, who is celebrating her own birthday today, said June 10 is the right day. Malia turns 11 on July 4.
With school out for the summer, Mrs. Obama, her mother, Marian Robinson, and her daughters flew to Paris Friday for a vacation aimed at showing the children the sights of two European capitals. Mrs. Obama and the family met up with President Obama (on his own international swing) in Paris on Friday. Mrs. Obama flew with the president to Normandy on Saturday for ceremonies marking the 65th anniversary of D-Day.
The Obama women visited French President Nicholas Sarkozy and his wife, Carla, on Sunday at the Elysee Palace. They flew to London on Monday morning, sightseeing and paying a call on Sarah Brown, wife of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, at No. 10 Downing Street, their official residence. On Tuesday they had a private tour of Westminster Abbey and took in a performance of "The Lion King" in the evening.
The First Lady's office has declined to say when she is coming home. "I can't talk about future travel," Mustaphi said. "I can confirm things that have happened in the past."
