Yes, "Have a Piece of Government Cake, but Don't Eat It" is the message coming out of a new poll from Quinnipiac University examining Americans' opinions of health care reform. Overall, 69 percent of respondents, who were registered Democrats, Republicans and independents, say Americans should have the option to enroll in a government-run health care option, but only 29 percent say they would want to use public health insurance themselves. That may be because most in the poll say they are very satisfied or somewhat satisfied with their own health care coverage.
Although the idea of a public option is popular, attitudes become murkier on how exactly to pay for a government health care potion. By a slim margin, 49 percent to 45 percent, respondents say they would pay more in taxes for a reformed health care system, but 72 percent say they would not be willing to pay more than $500 per year. Also, 63 percent oppose the idea of taxing a person's employer-sponsored health care benefits to pay to improve the system. White House adviser David Axelrod refused to rule out a benefits tax during an interview last Sunday on "Meet the Press."
"Seven out of 10 voters aren't willing to chip in what amounts to the price of a cheese pizza per week – without extra toppings – in order to finance an overhaul," said Paul Brown, assistant director of polling at Quinnipiac. He also said Americans' personal satisfaction with their own health care complicates reformers' efforts. "That presents a challenge to those who want Americans to pay more to reform the system."
Finally, by a 14-point margin, a majority said the primary goal of health care reform in Congress should be to reduce costs for everyone, rather than to provide coverage for everyone.

The medical-industrial complex has about 3 more years of ever increasing costs untill it prices its self out of the market for common everyday folk in the USA. Within that time as costs and prices increase fewer and fewer of us will be able to afford coverage of any kind. 4-5 years out only the really wealthy will be able to pay for medical attention. The medical- industrial complex bubble is the next to burst.

The government needs to stay out of people's business. That's what differentiates this country from others. We have FREEDOM to do and choose. Healthcare needs some tweeking. Doctors need to be more proactive in preventative care. Insurance companies need to be monitored and regulated more stringently. The week and needy, but worthy need health care. Yes, there needs to be changes, but the last thing Americans need is more bureacracy.

Healthcare needs tweaking??!! Reminds me of Bullwinkle on his 851st attempt to pull a rabbit out of his hat. He earnestly turns to the camera and says, "This time for sure!" The private health care industry has been "trying" to solve the escalating cost issue for 40 years. It's past time to at least try a new hat.

One thing that would help the costs in hospitals. We need to quit treating illegals. Also when they run across the border and give birth, if the mother's illegal the baby's illegal! The government is giving our social security to illegals. I am not racist, but they can only let so many people in this country each year and the ones they let in need to pay their way, we shouldn't have to pay for them! Also I don't understand why Obama says we should pay for abortions all over the world, do you? If an American goes to Mexico they won't pay for your medical, we should send the medical bills for illegals to the President of Mexico.

The bottom line is - if you or I had the kind of two year cancer fight that poor Farrah Fawcett had, it would DESTROY your entire family savings and reduce you to food stamps. THIS HEALTH SYSTEM IS BROKEN, and need more than "tweaks". Hospitals need to stop being run on a corporate profit system. Health care should be a RIGHT of all Americans, like education is.

sitokhan1: Healthcare is a practice that takes a SOMEONE ELSE'S time, money, skills, and other resources. Therefore, you do not have a RIGHT to healthcare.

Amanda, EDUCATION also takes people, time and resources, yet since the beginnings of the Republic, every American regardless of fortune can get a free primary education. I'm sure there were NeoCons who call that Socialist too.

why isn't the government looking at what has attributed to the increase in health care costs since the '60's? Litigation is a big one - causing malpractice insurance to sky rocket and Dr's to perform needless tests in order to protect themselves, just in case. There is a lot more regulation which has increased the cost of doing business, more paperwork, etc. The government could put a national cap on malpractice awards as they did in California, decrease a lot of the regulation - a good majority of it doesn't really accomplish anything but job security for someone. make individual health and dental policies tax deductable for families and sole proprietors - keeping the business deduction for same. If the government has to put its hand into the mix, let it offer coverage in limited areas- where people would be unable to get coverage. Health Insurance coverage should decrease in cost if it could compete on individual policies - and treatment was less costly due to dr's not having to perform every possible test just to cover their backends from potential lawsuits - there are a lot of avenues out there - gov't health care has not been efficient anywhere in the world - there is a big increase in people seeking personal policies in Canada - England once banned people from getting personal policies, and the government provided care there continues to decline and the costs rise - Health care is not a right, it is a privilege - but one that should and can be within our means if the gov't did limited things and got the heck of the rest of it......... government regulation and litigation are the two largest factors in the huge increase in health care costs.......

I find it very hard to believe that the group picked was representative. The majority of the people who need the healthcare, COBRA recipients, the unemployed, underemployed, minimum wage earners, even the homeless, are very unlikely to be registered, and very unlikely to have the time to do the poll. I don't think it's applicable. And those who are earning the least can't afford the price of a cheese pizza every week- at minimum wage that's 3% of their gross income. That's a big chunk.
There are almost 50 million people without insurance, that's close to 20%, but according to the poll, 29% would like to use the government plan. If the poll is under-represented by the uninsured or underinsured, that means more than 30% would like to have the health insurance from the government! And this fear about costs is exaggerated. The health insurance companies are profitable- very profitable. The idea that a government run program must be a black hole of finances doesn't add up. If we work it out well, negotiate for good prices, etc. it should be very good for both the people who need it and the government.
I'll use it! It couldn't be worse than my current insurance.

They only reason most Americans like their health care plan is their employer is paying for it........The costs are escalating so fast however more and more employers are getting out of providing health care. Once that happens and most people have to actually start paying for their own health insurance they will be begging for a public plan..........

Larry: I pay for my own health insurance out of my own pocket. I'd rather pay for healthcare voluntarily than have the government force me to give up 60% of my paycheck.

That's not true Larry
I have paid for my own health insurance for over 25 years. I worked for a large corporation for many years and they provided insurance for me for those years. I left the company and purchased my own. I also had COBRA for awhile prior to getting my own. I have a good plan, hospitalization only, I pay for my preventive care out of my pocket. It is worth it to me to be proactive in my life. I wouldn't wish the government to be over me like a duck on a junebug. What a rather ignorant statement you've made. We have federal health if you can't pay for your own. The children will be taken care of. The aliens should go back to where they came from or be flatly refused healthcare. That would take care of alot of the expense of healthcare.

Just what is so hard to figure out about health care and it's associated costs? The US is 37th in the world for quality health care BEHIND countries like Canada, England, even Morroco, that ALL have universal health care. People keep bad-mouthing these countries with the crap they hear on FAUX news. ALL these countries have healthier citizens with a longer life expectancy than the US. If their health plans are SO bad, why are they living longer, healthier lives than us? Quit sucking up the kool-aid the health insurance companies keep feeding you and GET A CLUE!

No wizard, I dont know where you get your info, but you are wrong. Just talk to people in Canada and they'll tell you if they need something serious to be done and can afford it then they come to America to get it done. I saw a special on Public Broadcasting this last winter and someone interviewed from England said he hoped the Americans did go the way of National Health care. And I'm not getting my info from Insurance companies. Personally I would pay l80.00 per month to have the same Health Care Insurance provided for our Politicians.

You need to get out more often and not believe all the info-commercial Pres. obama and his team are feeding you. If you have private insurance in those countries you mentioned then you have exellent care, otherwise get in line.

This is a FRIGHTENING possibility for the future if ObamaCare fails in its current form. Obama may force us to take universal healthcare by necessity by ruining AIG. http://bit.ly/hNUSy
