What can I say? Black Americans do not want inclusion, they want a country of their own. It cannot be found here, so perhaps they they are better served to look elsewhere. Frederick Douglass, in his indictment of America, was not knowlegeable with the wrongs of other people in other countries. Because he lived in America, that was the depth and breadth of his experience, and so, it is America that he despised. Things change, and we must change with them, or we will be left behind in an isolated world without the knowledge that would free us to be more than we were.

First, Stephen Douglas did not seem to despise the America of the 19th century but its actions, its hypocrisy. The words of the Declaration of Independence, written by men that he admired, gave him hope that someday slavery must end as men of good conscience yielded to their better natures. As you mention, certainly other countries have committed wrongs. Their role in perpetuating slavery is often overlooked, making America seem like the sole perpetrator of that crime against humanity. Even Africans participated in the capture and sale of their countrymen as European ships transported them to the auction blocks. However, that we shared in an international conspiracy while building our nation on the backs of oppressed peoples, enslaved or indentured, does not diminish the atrocity. And that much of the world participated in it long after the ages of so-called 'enlightenment' makes it all the more repugnant. All nations have a duty to remember and be vigilant against the tendency for morality to become a commodity when the price is right. This includes, amongst a long list of present day evils, arms sales to undeveloped nations that put guns in the hands of children forced to fight in genocidal wars. As to the comment on what Blacks might want, every segment of the population, including Poles in Wisconsin, the Pennsylvania Dutch, the Italians of New York, orientals, the Irish, hispanics, latinos, native Americans - the endless list of subsets that forms the melting pot that is America - wants the right to maintain aspects of their uniqueness and to prosper from their labors while nourishing the next generation. In every sect are countless examples of people working together to build families and communities that are American, combating problems that cross all boundaries like the costs of healthcare and education, as well as the loss of jobs and homes. There are parents offering up their precious sons and daughters to fight our wars who have a legitimate stake in deciding our nations policies. Young people are going after education against the odds and stirring an older, more complacent generation to remember what it was like to get involved to affect positive change. Things do evolve, experience does broaden, and our nation can move forward if we resist the temptation to paint all members of any group with one brush.

The sad thing is, that people like you don't care. What do you care about? Clothes, drinking, partying, etc. It is this country that allows you to do that, and if you don't care then don't complain when your freedoms are taken away

Just have to keep racism going don't we... sow more hatred and division... give those who do not think for themselves clearly more ammunition to ruin our country... and I wonder if these (some), might be the same ones that preach the love of Jesus... double standards and double mindness....We all need to start being real careful and discerning about what we listen to and who we listen to.... just like in a health care crisis we get a secong opinion... well people start using your brains... ever hear of zero liablity voter? It is a voter who uses a vote with no thought and contributes nothing, not a thing to society except for to collect on all the free programs....

after the election of Barack Obama , the self=styled "Mainstream Media" all trumpeted that it demonstrated the"death of racism" in our country. On the contrary, it proved that racism was alive and strong here. Approximately 96% of all african-american voters cast their ballots for Obama, for no other reason but his race. We heard throughout the campaign Black voters saying things like " It's about time we had a Black president", or "Let's see what a black man can d as President". Not once did we hear a black voter saying that he was voting for Obama because he approved of Obama's program. He really appoved of his race. When whites choose their candidates based on his skin color, the "Mainstream Media"are quick to brand it racism. But apparently Blacks are not capable of racism. As long as this situation prevails, we will never be rid of racism

so true, so true. Obama needs to be judged on his ACTIONS, not his words OR is skin color.

mhkolod, you are quite right. Obama was elected based solely on his race -- 96% african-americans, 67% hispanic, 62% asian -- and the racism was basically anti-white (white americans were split approximately 50/50 between Obama and McCain). This is the story the media will not address: that racism is now strongest in the non-white communities.
Well, now we get the product of that racism:
A president who is failing us and our children economically.
A president who is pushing national health insurance (how does that improve Health Care? does having insurance mean you will get better and necessary care? NO!).
A president who wants to limit CO2 production to save the world even though CO2 is a lagging indicator of global warming and sunspot activity, the earth's magnetic field, the earth's eliptical orbit, and its precession and nutation -- things we cannot control -- are really the culprits in climate change.
God help us all when race trumps ability!

I believe Douglass believed in America and it could change . America is the greatest country in this world yet Obama doesnt seem to think so. At the rate he is going we will become one of the poorer countries if he isnt stopped. AS a veteran of 8 years in the US Navy, it angers me greatly to listen to his apologetic attitude when he visits foreign countries. Bush and his cronies gave America a black eye i admit. But we should not have to appologize. What country does the world look to when atrocities are committed and need to be stopped? Who condemns other countries when their citizens commit atrocities against US citizens? Obama in no way resembles anything Douglass was talking about. if you want to get technical, he is only half black and seems to have forgotten his white mother.

It always amazes me to kisten to the left leaning philosophers here that always absolve the rest of the left leaning third world countries for their complicity in allowing terrorist forces to operate unabated in their countries. Of course Bush gets blamed for not controlling those countries and their appeasement of terrorism. But in the same breath to blame a neophyte like BHO for his well meaning attempts at school yard conflict resolution is not to recognize that you put the children in control of your country and expect them to act like adults. These are the people who never accept responsibility for the outcome of their decisions, they always blame Bush...it is part of being a child.

The President could really go to the head of the line IF he would kick the U.N. out of the country as they are no good anyway. New York is losing a vast amount of money because of non-payment of traffic tickets. Next thing to do is to stop freebies to countries that vote against the U.S. and there are a bunch of them, these countries are the first to condem the U.S. on anything that they can. A lot on money is wasted in that one area. As for me it doesnt make any difference if I am black or white. I am an American as we all are and proud of it. Folks, We just need to slow down a bit and take stock of whats ahead of us. We have got to close ranks. Believe me there is no racism in a foxhole.

I truly believe we've been taken by the "minorities". Not only do we have Chicago's village idiot, but a quota. Well, that is what happens when we allow the public to make the youth of America believe that people of different race have been dicrimanated against for hundreds of years.
Wake up America. I am a USMC vet. A graduate from U.S.C. and U.T., yet I still have to compete with people with lesser qualifications, and because I am a WHITE male I am not considered.
I believe and truly hope that a motivated individual ends this farce!

Hello. White men are STILL on top of the world. What is your beef? Minorities have always had to struggle to be recognized, work twice as hard doing the same job in order to get the attention needed for advancement. Women know these things. We are not white men either.

The U.S.A. is unique in world history. It is not perfect, but it has the freedom to pursue perfection. The key to moving forward toward this goal rests largely in the hands of the media. If they will abandon propagandizing and honestly inform the voting public, we will move more rappidly in the rightr direction.
