Ruth Madoff Asks for Fur Coat

Ruth Madoff makes Marie "Let them Eat Cake" Antoinette look like Mother Teresa.

Thursday, when U.S. marshals forced Ruth Madoff out of the $7 million Manhattan penthouse paid for by money her husband, convicted felon Bernie Madoff, stole from his investors, she asked to take a fur coat with her.

Go figure how she thought walking around the Upper East Side in a fur coat in July would not not be obvious.

The Madoffs' remorse seems to have been just an effort to get a shorter jail sentence for Bernie. Clearly, with Mrs. Madoff thinking she needs the fur coat more than she needs to sell it so she can give something back to the victims of her husband's schemes, she is not repentant.

Bernie Madoff's long-time personal assistant, Eleanor Squillari, wrote in Vanity Fair magazine that Ruth had been at the very least ignorant on purpose, and possibly complicit in her husband's activities. She had a large office of her own in the Madoff headquarters, and according to the assistant, "Ruth did the office bookkeeping. She paid the bills. I don't know what else she was doing, but she definitely handled all the invoices that came in."

Madoff's loyal assistant also wrote that "Bernie was planning to be arrested, but he wasn't sure which day it should be arranged to happen. The only thing that didn't make sense, if he had planned everything so carefully, was why Ruth would come into the office for the $10 million withdrawal from her Cohmad account on the day before his arrest. Did Bernie tell her to do it? Or did she do it on her own, without Bernie's knowledge, because she was panicked and wanted to make sure she would have enough cash after her husband was hauled off to jail?"

Ruth Madoff's need to keep up appearances was well known; Squillari said that "she would spare no expense for her appearance--clothes, designer handbags, expensive haircuts, cosmetic surgeries (over the years there were several)." But according to the AP, after U.S. marshals told Ruth she couldn't leave her penthouse with the fur, she departed with merely a straw bag -- a much more fitting end to the Madoff saga.
