Capitol Hill Bureau Chief
As Sen. Dianne Feinstein read her opening statement during today's confirmation hearing for Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor, a man seated in the back row of the hearing room and dressed in a dark suit jumped to his feet and yelled, "Senator, what about the unborn! Abortion is murder!"
Capitol Police quickly restrained the man and pulled him from the room through a side door as he yelled, "Stop murdering Latino babies!"
The committee chairman, Patrick Leahy, pounded his gavel and warned, "We will have order. We will have decorum. I will direct the police to remove anybody who has an outburst either for or against the judge."
Sen. Jeff Sessions, the ranking member of the committee, added, "Mr. Chairman, I support you 100 percent."
Earlier today, a handful of protesters waved signs and chanted outside of the Senate, both in favor of and against the judge. A women held a sign that read "AHORA Para Muheres" (NOW for Women); a man yelled "Sotomayor Si!" echoing his poster with the same message, and a man or a woman (hard to tell) dressed as the grim reaper stood at the door of the Hart Senate Office Building to protest against abortion.
