You were wondering where Bernie Madoff would end up after orchestrating a gigantic Ponzi scheme and bilking investors out of billions of dollars? He arrived Tuesday at the Butner Federal Correctional Complex in Butner, N.C. It's not certain if it will be his last stop, but for now, he can settle in. The prison, about 45 miles northwest of Raleigh, is known for a hospital equipped to treat elderly and ill prisoners.
He's got high-profile company at Butner, which also contains two medium-security facilities and a low-security facility. Among them: John Rigas, of Adelphia Communications, and his son, Tim Rigas, convicted on multiple charges of securities fraud, conspiracy to commit bank fraud and bank fraud; Jonathan Pollard, the American convicted of spying for Israel, and Omar Abdel-Rahman, also known as the blind sheik, who was sentenced to life in prison in 1995 for his role in a plot to kill Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and blow up New York City landmarks.
If Madoff, 71, behaves himself, he'll be released in 2139.
Madoff certainly will fit in at his new home a lot better than he would in the town of Butner. The estimated median household income in 2007, according to city-data.com, was $44,830. The per-capita income was $17,873, and the estimated median house or condo value was $135,264.
It's unlikely anyone in Madoff's new hometown would have qualified for his investment advice.
Lucky for them.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
