Capitol Hill Bureau Chief
Good morning, Capitolists! On the menu on Capitol Hill today: Food, Rice, health care and whatever's happening behind
those closed doors at the Senate Finance Committee. We'll keep an eye on that, while you keep an eye on this. It's what's happening in Washington today . . .
* The president heads to Raleigh, N.C., and a Kroger grocery store in Bristol, Va., to whip up public support for health care reform.
* At 10 a.m., the House gavels in to debate the Food Safety Enhancement Act.
* U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice testifies before the House Foreign Affairs Committee at 10 a.m. about American peacekeeping operations around the world.
* Just in time for Congress's August vacation, the National Resources Defense Council releases water-quality reports on the 200 most popular beaches in America. At 10 a.m., they promise to answer the question everyone's asking: "Are Americans swimming in sewage?"
* Speaking of sewage, is pre-washed lettuce actually clean? We'll all find out when the House Oversight Committee holds a 2 p.m. hearing to see what's really in bags of pre-washed produce.
* If you are a small business owner getting gray hair over health care reform, log onto
WhiteHouse.gov at 3 p.m. to ask Christina Romer what health care reform means for your biz.
* Tonight, Nora Ephron donates items from her new movie, "Julie and Julia," to one of the Smithsonian's most popular exhibits, Julia Child's original kitchen.
