The First Family lives in Washington with lots of new friends (and some Chicago pals come and visit), but with only one relative. Marian Robinson, the mother of First Lady Michelle, lives with them in the White House. Now, a member from the Obama side of the family is coming to town. Maya Soetoro-Ng, President Obama's half sister, is moving from Hawaii to Washington for several months.
I last saw Soetoro-Ng on the South Lawn of the White House on June 16, when she hung around awhile to watch Mrs. Obama, her sister-in-law, harvest vegetables from the White House garden with schoolchildren from Washington.
Soetoro-Ng told me then she was staying at the White House a few days. She was in Washington to also attend to her new duties as an Obama appointee to the President's Commission on White House Fellowships.
Now she will be in town for several months, the
New York Times is reporting.
From the
NYT: Ms. Soetoro-Ng, who has given up her job as a high school teacher in Hawaii, has a book contract and a new baby. Her husband, Konrad Ng, a professor at the University of Hawaii, will become the scholar-in-residence at the Smithsonian Institution's Asian Pacific American Program here next month. I asked the East Wingers for comment Friday and the word back to me is they can't speak to Soetoro-Ng's arrival or plans.
