Guantanamo Detainees Plan: Courtroom-Prisons in US?

To meet the president's promise to close the Cuba facility by January, officials are exploring bringing Guantanamo inmates to a hybrid military-civilian prison in the United States to be detained and tried, Associated Press is reporting.

On Sunday, officials told the wire service that the Justice Department has assigned dozens of Guantanamo detainee cases to federal prosecutors in Washington, D.C., Virginia and New York, while the Pentagon has shown a preference for holding the terrorism trials in the Midwest. One initiative is considering a "courtroom-within-a-prison complex" for a heavily guarded site in the U.S. heartland, possibly at a refitted maximum security prison in Michigan or the military penitentiary at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., that would hold the 229 suspected terrorists now jailed at Guantanamo.

In an article by the Tribune Papers, however, officials emphasized that "nothing had been decided and that other options were under consideration by a multi-agency task force studying detainee issues."
