Rielle Hunter: Can't Get a Babysitter or Something to Prove?

Rielle Hunter, the former mistress of ex-Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.), arrived at a federal courthouse to testify before a grand jury with a baby in her arms. People bring all kinds of things to grand juries -- lawyers, brief cases, evidence, supportive spouses. But a baby?
When I saw Bonnie's story earlier about Hunter's appearance at the Edwards campaign finance investigation, my first reaction was excitement that we might finally learn something about their affair, the paternity of the child and if he illegally paid her from his campaign coffers.
But, reading further that she entered "carrying a young child," I clicked over to watch the video. To my shock, what Hunter does while carrying the little girl into the courthouse was, in my view, even worse than what the wire reports described.
Hunter arrived with her lawyers in a black SUV and took the little girl out of a car seat from the back. In matching pink and white outfits, Hunter held her daughter against her chest as they walk toward the courthouse. The baby, wearing a white sun hat, hid her face in her mother's pink sweater-draped shoulder.
Hunter then clearly pushed the little girl's head around so that she was facing the cameras. The first time she did this, I thought that maybe she was just adjusting the baby's head to make her more comfortable. But, the SECOND time she did it, it became clear, at least to me, that Hunter was deliberately forcing the little girl to face the waiting cameras.
Both John and Elizabeth Edwards have denied that he is the father of Hunter's daughter. So, was this an attempt to show a physical resemblance to John Edwards? Or was this a publicity stunt to appear the vulnerable single mother as her own involvement with campaign money is questioned? Or does Hunter just take her baby everywhere, like a pocketbook?
Next time Rielle Hunter has a public appearance or is testifying in court, I'd be happy to babysit, no charge.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
