In yet another sign that the recession may be waning, the national unemployment rate fell to 9.4 percent and the number of jobs shed in July was a less-than-expected total of 247,000. The numbers represent the first drop in unemployment figures since July of 2008. Analysts had expected a rise in the overall unemployment rate, and a more modest dip in the July figures.
damn obama..maybe his stupid economic theories are starting to work...damn him

Despite the shrinking job losses, the recession remains far from over for millions of Americans. The number of long-term unemployed -- people who have not been able to find work in 27 weeks or more -- increased by 584,000 to 5 million. The longer they are unemployed, the more likely they are to run through savings and their housing is more at risk. More than 14 million Americans are unemployed. An alternative measure of unemployment, which includes discouraged workers and those who still want a job but have stopped looking, was largely unchanged at 16.3 percent. The unemployment benefits of 500,000 Americans are expected to run out of by the end of next month. A total of about 1.5 million unemployed are expected to be in the same predicament by year's end.

jim..this is 2009 not 1980..new problems different solutions,,,, small business..passing universal health care would be the best thing for small business..which means small business wouldn't have to pay for their employee total healthcare..which means they would have more money to hire more people

The media is incredibly dishonest! Are you sick of this crap? Where are the new jobs? How many people are there that did not qualify for unemployment? How many people had the benefit run out and cannot find a job? How stupid!

So the recessions over let Odumbo come out here in the job market then. Oh, he's never held a job, or paid a person or ran a dry cleaners. Soup Kitchens don't have to show a profit. If its over cancel the other 95% of the porkulus bill that hasn't been spent yet on his cronies and acorn. Shovel ready, Right! None of the projects will create permanent jobs like the private sector can. Meanwhile small business fail by the thousands, the job creating businesses. Odumbo's attack on entreprenuers continues. By the time he is done Government will account for 60% of the economy. America will be the new France. Get used to double digit employment, I have confident he'll get us there yet.

David Knowles needs to go back to banging his drums and sticking to writing fantasy. What a tool. Gives "real" journalists a bad rap.

When the GDP was not as bad as predicted, people called "bullsh!t"! Now the unemployment rate was not as bad as predicted and people still call "bullsh!t"! No one feels all the problems our union faces economically are over. All this says is that things COULD be improving. GDP and employment are tantamount to a strong economy.

Are they still counting the people who have now lost their unemployment benefits? I remember once reading they weren't even counting people who were on the extension end of their unemployment. Mine ends in one week. I want to have hope as I am a scared single mom, but I'm not really sure their numbers are acurate. It may just look good to them with all the people who are dropping off of unemployment now. I want to be optimistic, but I'm not feeling it. I'm not seeing anymore jobs in the paper. (or online!)

I have wondered and waited for all of the reporters and economic think tanks to put this out and no one has.. so.. Why are we not pulling together and going back to the BUY American? If the trickle down effect has put so many of us out of work and brought so many companies to thier knees cant the trickup effect also work ? For months now if it does not say Made In USA I do not buy it, that includes canned fruit, yes you heard me right the canned fruit you buy in the grocery is Not from our farmers, not a Walmart bash but I don’t shop there much anymore because it is so hard to find USA products, I have learned if I cant find it USA made I don’t need it for the most part there are somethings that I have to have like car parts, I request USA and have to pick from China or Mexico and I drive an american made car ! I would like american made parts ! If we all stick to this for even 6 months It has to bring back supply and demand which means more Americans will return to work pay taxes and start to bring the huge spending under control, If we bring less into our country, then we will have to produce it, I fear for my kids, we can’t afford collage now, most of our 401 is gone and there aren’t any jobs. There should be an internet site that american companies can sign up at with a product list and who sells thier products so we can easily find them and buy more American Goods
