Good morning, Capitolists! Did you know that P.D. readers are attracted to the term "angry mobs"? I've noticed that every time I write "angry mobs," readers click on and comment on that column. So in the spirit of giving the peeps what they want, I've included your Daily Angry Mob update as a part of Washington in 60 Seconds, complete with video.
Also, here's what's making news in Washington today:
* The president is in Mexico for a North American summit, the veep is on Kiawah Island, David Wood is in Afghanistan, and the Capitolist stayed behind to keep an eye on the store.
* A local Democratic official praises Vice President Biden for vacationing in South Carolina, "even though the governor feels he has to leave for vacation." (Post and Courier, Charleston)
* A top U.S. commander tells the Wall Street Journal that the Taliban is winning in Afghanistan and it's time to adjust.
* A series of four bombs have killed dozens in Mosul and Baghdad in the deadliest series of attacks since U.S. troops pulled back in Iraqi cities. (BBC)
* Gov. Charlie Crist (R-Fla.) has five weeks to fill Mel Martinez's Senate seat. Will he pick an elder statesman/ seat warmer, or a young, up-and-comer who could revitalize the GOP but hurt his own campaign? The Southern Political Report breaks it down.
* Phyllis Schlafly receives the Clare Boothe Luce Lifetime Achievement award today. Snaps, Phyllis.
* And finally, your Angry Mob Update: Congressman David Scott (D-Ga.) fought back against an angry mob in Georgia over the weekend, although his mob didn't seem as angry as others we've seen. In fact the Congressman becomes incensed by a doctor's question. (CNN, below)
In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
