Washington Reporter
In a rambling column published this week, former Cuban president Fidel Castro praised President Obama's agenda and warned that the "racist right will do everything possible to wear him down."
"It was logical that many hopes would be aroused among U.S. citizens who supported him," Castro
writes. "However, an elemental knowledge of reality should have sufficed for not falling into illusions in relation to a possible political change in the United States on the basis of the election of a new president." He expresses perplexity at the American right's vehement opposition to Obama, since the president supports the "imperial capitalist" system and is not attempting to change it significantly.
Castro goes on to copy extensively from a
Washington Post report on Obama's falling poll numbers, selecting passages that describe radical health care protesters and warnings about right-wing extremism. He refers to New York Gov. David Paterson's recent
remarks about racism against black politicians, presumably to substantiate his prediction that America's "traditionally racist society" will be Obama's undoing.
Castro concludes: "Hopefully I am mistaken!"
Our New Approach to Comments
In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers –
a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around.
