A new
InsiderAdvantage poll finds that 49.5 percent of South Carolina's registered voters think it is time for their embattled governor, Mark Sanford, to resign. The poll showed 36.6 percent believe he should stay put. Republican support has eroded for Sanford since he revealed his protracted affair with an Argentine woman, and ethical questions have emerged about his taxpayer-funded travel. Only 47.1 percent of GOP voters now say Sanford should stay in office.
Calls from other elected officials for Sanford to resign continue to mount. On Wednesday, the state's lieutenant governor, Andre Bauer, told Sanford the
writing was on the wall:
"The serious misconduct that's already been revealed, plus the lingering questions and continuing distractions, make it virtually impossible for our state to solve the critical problems we're facing without a change in leadership."
Republican lawmakers met on Tuesday to discuss starting impeachment proceedings. Through it all, Sanford has remained defiant, declaring, "I will not be railroaded out of office."
Perhaps Sanford will somehow survive the increasing opposition from the public and the Republican legislature. But with each passing day, the end of his once-promising political career appears to be inching closer.
