Speaking Thursday, President Obama accepted South Carolina congressman Joe Wilson's apology for shouting "You lie!" during Obama's health care speech Wednesday night. Obama thanked Wilson for apologizing "quickly and without equivocation," and said he understands that "we all make mistakes."
Meanwhile, at the Democrats' press conference this morning, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi
said it was time for Democrats to move on from the incident. "As far as I'm concerned, the episode was unfortunate. Mr. Wilson has apologized. It's time for us to talk about health care and not Mr. Wilson."
But some tension remains after the apology, with different members of the House from both parties insisting that Wilson apologize more formally. Wilson said his original apology to Rahm Emanuel was intended for everyone involved and that he would not repeat it on the House floor. "Period," Wilson added for emphasis. He also mentioned that out of the "hundreds" of phone calls he had received over the incident, most had been supportive of his behavior.
