Senate Moves Swiftly to Block ACORN Funding

Motivated by a series of undercover videos that show ACORN employees offering tax advice to investigators posing as a pimp and a prostitute, the Senate voted 83-7 on an amendment blocking the community-organizing group from bidding for federal grants. Also, prosecutors in Florida have issued arrest warrants for ACORN personnel, alleging that they falsified voter records during the 2008 election, and the Census Bureau has severed all ties with the group for next year's census.
ACORN -- the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now -- has received $1.6 million to provide affordable housing in its current fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30, and Republican lawmakers say it has received $53 million since 1994. The new measure is an amendment to the spending bill that funds the department of Housing and Urban Development for fiscal year 2010. Several Democrats broke trend and voted against the measure, including Illinois Sen. Roland Burris and New York rookie Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.
