A day after the press reported that President Obama was privately pressuring New York Gov. David Paterson to withdraw from his race for re-election, the two met on the tarmac at Albany International Airport on Monday. Obama gave Paterson a half-embrace before whispering in his ear, drowned out by the noise of the plane. The president was reportedly not smiling.

But a short time later, after being introduced by Paterson, Obama called the governor "a wonderful man."
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs publicly addressed -- and did not deny -- Obama's request for Paterson to bow out of the race. "I think people are aware of the tough situation that the governor of New York is in," he said. "I wouldn't add a lot to what you've read, except this is a decision that he's going to make. The president understands the tough job that everyone has and the pressure that they are under."
