The announced retirement of two-term Kentucky Sen. Jim Bunning may have left the door open for Democrats to steal this GOP seat, with potential match-ups between candidates from both parties pointing to races that are close, or at least competitive, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted Sept. 30. The margin of error for this poll is 4.5 percent.

Republican Secretary of State Trey Grayson leads Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo 44 percent to 37 percent with 4 percent preferring another candidate and 14 percent undecided. But he splits the vote with Attorney General Jack Conway at 40 percent each with three percent preferring someone else and 17 percent undecided.
Eye surgeon and political activist Paul Rand leads Mongiardo 43 percent to 38 percent with 6 percent preferring another candidate and 13 percent undecided. But Rand trails Conway 42 percent to 38 percent with 4 percent preferring someone else and 15 percent undecided.
All four are seen favorably by Kentuckians except for Mongiardo who is seen unfavorably by 43 percent and favorably by 41 percent, but that in part reflects that fact that only 16 percent don't know enough about him to form an opinion, while the others are unknown by between 24 percent and 27 percent.
