Good morning, Capitolists! After months of obsession with health care, Washington is turning its focus overseas to Afghanistan this week. The president has said he won't decide on troop levels until he decides on a strategy for the war. Until then, expect Congressional leaders and top military brass to weigh in on both.
Here's what's making news in Washington today:
* In the morning, Vice President Biden meets with SoS Hillary Clinton and Richard Holbrooke, the special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan.
* In the afternoon, the president and vice president meet with congressional leaders at the White House to discuss Afghanistan.
* Gen. David Petraeus speaks to the Association of the U.S. Army at 3 p.m. Petraeus has taken a low profile in the debate on the way forward in Afghanistan, but reporters and lawmakers alike will be listening for the general to make news on that front today.
* Brent Scowcroft, President George H.W. Bush's national security adviser, told the Washington Times that President Obama has succeeded in changing the tone of America's relationship with the world compared with the George W. Bush administration, but that retreat from Afghanistan would be "catastrophic."
* With her organization under fire and losing money, the head of ACORN, Bertha Lewis, speaks at the National Press Club today.
* The Supreme Court goes into Day 2 of its new session, but USA Today writes about Justice Sonia Sotomayor's first official day on the job yesterday. According to the paper, SoSo needed to interrupt a lawyer and Justice Stephen Breyer to get a few words in edgewise. "You have to ask in a hurry or you're never going to get a question in," she explained.
