Add Tavis Smiley to the list of commentators with an opinion on President Obama's Nobel Peace Prize. Smiley, in Charlotte, N.C., on Saturday to speak at a financial literacy and economic empowerment seminar aimed at African Americans, acknowledged Obama's role in changing the "tenor and tone in this country and in the world."
"I celebrate that" and the prize, he said, before adding that the president's task is "to live up to the honor."
"Before honor comes humility," Smiley said, listing previous Peace Prize winners Ralph Bunche, Martin Luther King,Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela, adding that Obama's "got work to do" before equaling the record of those who came before him.
He said, taking note of the president's deliberations on the next steps in Afghanistan, that "you can't be Peace Prize recipient and a war president."
Even Obama himself acknowledged that he "didn't deserve it," Smiley said, referring to the president's reaction to receiving the prize.
(On Friday, Obama said: "To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who've been honored by this prize -- men and women who've inspired me and inspired the entire world through their courageous pursuit of peace. But I also know that this prize reflects the kind of world that those men and women, and all Americans, want to build -- a world that gives life to the promise of our founding documents. And I know that throughout history, the Nobel Peace Prize has not just been used to honor specific achievement; it's also been used as a means to give momentum to a set of causes.")
Smiley, who currently hosts a late-night talk show televised on PBS and a radio show distributed by Public Radio International, referred to criticism he received because of sharp commentaries on candidate Obama on the "Tom Joyner Morning Show," the syndicated radio program. Smiley said it was about "accountability." He said it was no different from his treatment of every candidate and office holder, including President Clinton, whom the talk-show host has often interviewed.
On Saturday, Smiley compared Obama's remarks that "a rising tide lifts all boats" to similar statements Ronald Reagan made about his economic policies. It all depends on if you're in a yacht or a dingy, Smiley said.
"Wall Street is celebrating already," Smiley said. A "laser-like focus" is needed, he said, on the issue of jobs, particularly in the black and brown communities, which have been hardest hit.

Tavis Smiley is still pissed at Obama for not appearing on his lame azz show, and sending Michelle instead.

I was one who was angry at Tavis when he first started to take on the President in what I thought was a mostly unfair manner, and although I still support the President, the President has really let me down in a number of KEY areas he promised he'd take action on. I KNOW Bush left the US in a real MESS, and Obama has to clean up after him. But this mess with health care--something he has recently started to engage in, is REALLY disappointing--especially since he KEEPS trying to reach out to Republicans who have proven time and again that they ARE the party of NO. Obama needs to just take control of the health care debate, and use HIS Democratic majority to get it passed--end of story!

jr, Hi there. Easy on Tavis with your comments. Tavis knows better than to get all presumptuous with Pres. Obama. The Nobel Committee have spoken. Pres. Obama needs no more pressure from people like Tavis.
Bridget, The health care debate/reform is not over yet, so I don't understand why you're getting all upset. We can't be ourselves and be Pres. Obama at the same time. Can't you see his style is his alone? As long as we get what we want, what do you care how he gets us there? The man is smart, does his homework, and calculates his moves.
By the way, did any of you see Dr. Lamont Hill on Bill O'Reilly the other night? O'Reilly made a fool of Hill who was all worked up on the NPP issue. O'Reilly said for America and peace to be in the same sentence is cause for celebration, period.

I agree with your comments on Tavis. We all know the real reason for his split with Tom Joiner.
I really feel sorry for Lamont Hill. He still hasn't figured out that O'Reilly is just using him like a punching bag. Hill never even gets a chance to state his points, or support it with evidence, and is reduced to a stuttering moron, while O'Reilly pins him to the ropes, and tries to forces him to defend the indefensible, until time runs out. Either that, or the "fix" is in on these so-called interviews. Hill should state right from the beginning that Bill is wrong, and this is why...a,b,c. He should then take the argument to Bill, and ask him the rhetorical questions, that support his point.
President Obama has tobe careful on the issue of healthcare. The Republicans want to make this a partisan issue, so they can use it as an assault on the Obama presidency, and contend, that he promised to change business as usual, but reniged on the biggest issue of his presidency. If you listen to Obama's speeches carefully, you would note, that he continually tries to refer to input from the other side. Grassley stabbed him in the back and jumped ship, so he is carefully crafting a coalition of big named Republicans outside of Congress, like Bob Dole, and Ah-nuld, to give the appearance of bipartisanship.
This is just a big chess game. The Republicans are stuck with their original plan to fight anything that The Democrats come up with, and at the same time propose nothing, or amenedments they know won't carry, in an attempt to delay, disrupt, or suspend the process.

The Difference... Truer words have seldom been written!
If a conservative doesn't like guns, they don't buy one. If a liberal doesn't like guns, then no one should have one.
If a conservative is a vegetarian, they don't eat meat. If a liberal is, they want to ban all meat products for everyone.
If a conservative sees a foreign threat, he thinks about how to defeat his enemy. A liberal wonders how to surrender gracefully and still look good.
If a conservative is homosexual, they quietly enjoy their life. If a liberal is homosexual, they loudly demand legislated respect.
If a black or Hispanic is conservative, they see themselves as independently successful. Their liberal counterparts see themselves as victims in need of government protection.
If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation. A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him.
If a conservative doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels. Liberals demand that those they don't like be shut down.
If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church. A liberal wants churches to be silenced.
If a conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it. A liberal demands that his government provide it and his neighbors pay for his.
Think about it!!!!!

So Mr. Smiley can hold this man "accountable" and not be called a racist. and yes I know he is black.
but anyone else who is opposed and expects accountibility are racist, just by challenging him.
you cannot live up to an honor, you know you did not earn, nor deserve, no matter how hard you try.
too many people think the big ZERO is so special.
who first stated, that the Big ZERO was not qualified, not properly educated, not experinced, and not ready to be president.
the answer is quite simple.
he, himself, the big ZERO did.
he knew in the very beginning, but he allowed himself to be influenced by Pelosi, Reid, and Dean,
and he got caught up in the hoop la.
He knew then, and he knows now he cannot do this job, and do it right.
and he knows he is not worthy of this prize, and he knows he cannot ever live up to what it stands for.
and I still claim, the most resonsible, the most respectible thing he could have done, was to politely decline it. but his ego just could not do that.
and by accepting an award he did not earn, he showed he thought he was entitled.
and pride goeth before a fall.

Tom Joiner, is a horse of a different color. Like Mike Steele, Alan Keyes, Bill Cosby, Juan Williams, and a handful of other attention whores, the only audiences they can get are those whites who want to listen to one black bashing another, so they can hold it up as "evidence" that some blacks "agree" with them. Sort of like Fixed News desperately looking for blacks at the teabagger rallies, so they can support the narrative, that this is an "American" movement, as opposed to a movement of angry, frustrated, and often bigoted, white people.

Jealousy, Jealousy is what is hurting Republicans and Fox News people. On many occasions I have told you fellow Americans that Obama is an angel. If your listen to his speeches you will find his words positively going to your soul. You feel that Obama is not only talking to you but calling you to improve your life and life of people around you. That is why Obama won this year Noble Peace Price. We know people pundits like Beck, Sean Hannity, Rush, Bill O'reilly and many others are unhappy that a Black person is in the White House and now a Noble Peace Price. However they forget that Obama characteristics were and are still above to any of those candidates competing for presidency at that time. Obama, as many of his father's tribe, is very intelligent and hard working. None of 2008 presidential hopefuls, regardless of race, could match Obama charisma. Of course some black people such as Allen Keyes, Michael Steele and others were jealous that such a young man should be our President. And do not forget this moron from S. Carolina shouting midst of Obama speech. He is just another George Wallace. All explains that some Republicans are unhappy that a democrat is in White House. After the election I saw Beck, Sean Hannity, Rush, Michael Steele, Bill O'reilly, Allan Keyes, the Bimbo from Alaska and other Christian fundamentalists cry their eyes off. Do you really think these morons will be quiet? Hell no. So they have been rallying other republicans to create chaos in this country. In any case people are now realizing that the TEA party is a group of grumpy Republicans. In fact if you interview any of them, you will find none of them has reason to picket other than sour grapes. Above do not believe in polls that Obama is slipping. Respondents of these polls are those with phones, computers. As such polls exclude poor and busy people. TEA party is now dying a natural death. The World has shown its love with Obama. Obama is our angel. God Bless America-We have Obama as our President. President Obama you have brought the whole world together. You therefore deserve the Noble

Tavis is correct when he says" before honor comes humility ". Since this is true then Obama will never live up to the honor of the award because of his pride. You see, humility is about what is right while pride is about who is right. Obama only cares about who is right and has no humility. If Obama was an honest man he would have declined the award respectfully but he has such a large ego that he could not do the right thing. Since when are awards given for hope of change or even good intentions but this award will certainly become another blunder in a long line of them for this president. I heard they were giving Obama the Super Bowl trophy this Friday right after he recives the World Series Title. WTF ???

'live up to' is the only option. in a transparently political move, countless worthy efforts were ignored and one who has done nothing of consequence was awarded the now meaningless 'prize'. while there is a whole lot of 'living up to' that needs to be done, right now the dominant concern will likely remain that of avoiding investigation.
