Obama Calls for Emergency $250 Payments to Social Security Recipients
Responding to the Labor Department's expected announcement that Social Security recipients will not see an increase in their benefit checks for the first time in three decades, President Obama called for one-time emergency payments of $250 for seniors, the disabled, and others receiving Social Security, the Washington Post reported Thursday. The payout, which will cost $13 billion, is part of the administration's ongoing effort to sustain the economic rebound without a massive additional stimulus bill.
Yearly increases in Social Security benefits have been a "ritual" since the 1970s, when the government moved to ensure that benefits kept pace with inflation. Last year's increase was an unusually high 5.8 percent, but stagnant consumer spending this year marks the first time that the Labor Department's formula will prescribe no increase.

With 500 billion in proposed Medicare cuts for seniors what a coincidence Obama is choosing NOW to come up with a $250 vote buying check to grease the skids for Government Run Health Care.

Forget the $250. Its a slap in the face. Write your congressman. They are the ones behind it all. This morning the banks are going to give out another big bonus. Bigger than last time. Enough is enough.

Buy back those seniors,Barry!!...Course the same libs were laughing when Bush sent out 400...and we don't have the money which means more debt..which means Obama lied in 08 when he said you will not sign anything that added to the deficeit...and the 250 is gone and then some before it ever gets to us...but its the thought that counts

as someone who is on disability and receives less then 800 a month i can say to all you nay sayers that this would not only help me but is very much needed you try to pay your bills with that kind of money and to read all this negative input is very disheartening

Congress increased their own benefits this year, or didn't you know that? This is a joke, I am retired also, and for this President to tell us that our costs of living have not gone up is another bald faced lie. Wait until next year, when we will be paying taxes on many more items we use in our every day life, including heating bills, electricity, food, etc. You need to find out what is happening all around you. We are on the bottom of the list as a concern to this President.

Twenty year old American Jamie Leigh Jones was drugged and gang-raped by KBR co-workers in Iraq. [That attack was so violent, her breasts are permanently disfigured.] After her attack she was locked in a shipping container without food or water, and after release warned not to leave her post. Jamie was a long way from anywhere with no help in sight. She stuck it out. [Jones is not an isolated case.] And, after Jamie made it back to U.S. soil, where there should have been help in sight, she was prevented from bringing charges in court. Her KBR contract stipulated sexual assault allegations could not be made in court. Sexual assault allegations could only be heard in arbitration.
In response to abuses of the “arbitration” contract clause used by military contractors like KBR, Senator Al Franken (D-MN) recently proposed an amendment to the 2010 Defense Appropriations bill that would withhold defense contracts from companies that contractually block employees from taking workplace sexual assault and battery cases to court. The Amendment passed. You would think something like this would pass unanimously too. Surely our Senators in Congress do not want to employ and protect companies that sanction gang rape? But it did not pass unanimously.
Thirty Senators voted against the Franken amendment. They all have four things in common. They are all Republicans. They are all white. They are all male. And judging by their votes, they all think gang rape is just a little horseplay among friends. Here are their names. And if you didn’t vote McCain/Palin be glad. McCain is on the list.

Does he realize how many elderly and disabled don't even care where the money comes from? They don't vote. They think only of themselves. They couldn't care less who is running this nation. Just gimme the the money. I know of many that are already looking forward to how much drugs they can buy with this money. They laugh about it. I know that there are also, very many who can really use this money. Not to take away from their needs. However, it disgusts me the way the druggies laugh at it all!

Maggie, I see what you are saying, and you are absolutely right.
there will always be those who abuse, and it is impossible to weed them out.

so instead of a raise that goes with the cost of living we get a whole $250.00.
so should we save it, or put it towards that extra $1700.00 we are exxpected to be paying this year thanks to cap and trade. or are we supposed to divide that up for the year, which amounts to a whole $20.83 a month. or better yet $4,81 a week. or is supposed to last for the next 2 years. yep here we go again.
I do not deny this tidbit won't help, but it is like trying to fix a leak in Hoover damn, with a bandaid.
and what a lot of you do not realize is everyone on social security pays a monthly premium for medicare, we do not get it free. plus we have to meet a deductible every year, plus we pay the difference that medicare does not pay.
so before you start cheering realize, this really won't help in the longrun.
and as Mrs. Big ZERO herself stated whn Bush gave out his stimulus checks last year,
' "You're getting $600.00- what can you do with that?" Mrs. Obama said in Pontiac, Michigan last week "Not to be ungrateful or anything, but maybe it pays down a bill, but it doesn't pay down every bill every month. The short-term quick fix kinda stuff sounds good, and it may even feel good that first month when you get that check, and then you go out and you buy a pair of earrings. " '

and no one should use bad economic times to further their own IDEOLOGICALLY DRIVEN AGENDA.
and if that does not make them both hypocrites, I don't know what does.
