Wendell Scott was a pioneer and deserves his due respect; no question. Just being on the track was huge. But are his actual stats as a racer deserving of enshrinement? No. Ernie Irvan, among others, all overcame their own unique battles to race against all odds. While remarkable in their triumphs, this does not make them HOF material. Mr. Wendell himself would cringe at the thought of himself usurping the likes of Richard Petty or Junior Johnson in the HOF inaugeral class based solely on his skin color.

Richard Petty a 7 time champion was shocked and upset because David Pearson didn't get in with 105 wins. A HOF isn't about struggles...nearly everyone that will be in there struggled just to get to that level. It's not about their struggles, it's about their achievements...right or wrong, in this sport, that means wins and or championships or other significant contributions. This evolved out of a rag-tag bunch of moonshiners and leadfoots that raced and hoped to win to get the purse for gas money to get home. Bill France Sr. took this crazy lot and organized them into what has become a huge industry. Along the way, there were many who's names will be lost to time. Maybe Mr. Scott will be among those. Had he won 50 or 100 major races, he certainly would be remembered, but there's little reason anyone, black or white should be enshrined when they only won a single race. Brad Doughery the former NBA player, now a Nationwide team owner will probably make it one day as a car owner. He's no token black...he's lived and breathed Nascar as long as he can remember...learning it from the ground up and after retiring from the NBA and building a team there were those that doubted him, feeling he was merely a token...nobody beleives that today. He's a good team owner, and does a very good job in the broadcast booth as a commentator. The fact Wendell Scott didn't make the initial cut had nothing to do with racism...in fact, had he been selected a pretty strong case for racism could have been made.
