First Lady Michelle Obama has four public appearances scheduled this week, capped by a guest spot on Jay Leno's new prime-time show Friday, via satellite from Washington. Earlier Friday, Mrs. Obama will dip into the health care discussion with a breast cancer event at the White House.
Mrs. Obama's bit with Leno will be his "Ten@Ten" feature, where the host asks 10 "rapid-fire" questions. The NBC program has featured a mix of show business, sports and political personalities for the segment, ranging from Tom Cruise and Miley Cyrus to Ben Roethlisberger to Sen. John McCain, Chris Matthews and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.
On Tuesday morning, Mrs. Obama continues her federal agency visits with a stop at the Department of Veterans Affairs. She'll visit with VA Secretary Eric Shinseki, other staff and deliver remarks.
On Wednesday afternoon, Mrs. Obama hosts what is billed as a Healthy Kids Fair with local public school students and their families. During the summer, the first lady brought in students to pick produce from the White House garden and then served the kids a small meal on the lawn. The East Wing says, "Experienced chefs and nutritionists from around the country will demonstrate healthy cooking, and preparing affordable meals for families," plus other unspecified stuff.
On Friday, Mrs. Obama joins President Obama's battle for Congress to pass health reform legislation by highlighting how insurance companies try to withhold coverage from people who need care the most. She throws a spotlight on Breast Cancer Awareness month with the White House event. East Wing planners want the event to "highlight the need for health care reform and how pre-existing conditions affect insurance coverage of breast cancer patients."
