Former president George W. Bush received a standing ovation from a crowd of 11,000 at a motivational conference in Texas, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Tuesday. The day-long "Get Motivated" event was the first of two that Bush will headline this year, and found the former president speaking in relaxed tones about his belief that he made the right decisions as president.

"Every single day I was honored to be your president by bringing honor and dignity to the office," Bush said Monday afternoon. Addressing his unpopularity at the end of his term, he added, "It's so simple in life to chase popularity, but popularity is fleeting. It's not real."

The event also featured former Secretary of State Colin Powell, who praised Bush's stint in office. "We are safer than we were before 9/11 because of President Bush," he said to applause. In his speech, Bush joined Powell in defending Republican positions on free-market economics and aggressive national defense.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
