Kristol: Only Conservative Populism Will Win for Republicans

Washington Post columnist William Kristol writes Tuesday that "the GOP is likely, for the foreseeable future, to be of a conservative mind and in a populist mood." Reviewing polls that show 40 percent of Americans and 72 percent of Republicans say they are "conservative," Kristol concludes that out-of-office candidates like Sarah Palin and Mike Huckabee embody the party's near future.
"The center of gravity, I suspect, will instead lie with individuals such as Palin and Huckabee and Gingrich, media personalities like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh, and activists at town halls and tea parties," Kristol writes. "Some will lament this -- but over the past year, as those voices have dominated, conservatism has done pretty well in the body politic, and Republicans have narrowed the gap with Democrats in test ballots."
Kristol points to upcoming elections in Virginia and New York where conservative candidates are likely to win -- some of them running against more liberal Republicans. "The lesson activists around the country will take from this is that a vigorous, even if somewhat irritated, conservative/populist message seems to be more effective in revitalizing the Republican Party than an attempt to accommodate the wishes of liberal media elites."

obama is a control freak if he can not control the media he wants nothing to do with them. he actually believes the american public to be stupid. he thinks that we will all just believ what he has to say and take what he has to give. His biggest mistake to date is taking the american public for granted and under estimating us. He is in for a very rude awakening.

From what I have heard,listening to Bill Kristol has never lead to success for anyone.I listen to talk radio,read several newspapers and magazines and watch news from all political leanings every week.However what I do most is listen to what I hear and see from people I come in contact with. I do not see this Backlash against Obama FOX news talks about.I also have seen these Tea Partys,the so called Huge Crowds were not there.I haven't seen enough anti-Obama or pro-Palin stickers to count on one hand.If these movements are Grass Roots they are rooted so deep you can't see them. I would say Kristol is entitled to his opinion,I would only suggest he actually go outside his own circles and talk to other people.

you must live in a bubble because the grassroots movement is huge, it is growing and is not going away. There are literally millions of people who have taken part in protests or are becoming politicaly active. I have been to 6 protests, including the 9/12 march which was huge- atleast 250,000 people. What is very telling is that conservatives/libertarians have always been model citizens who voted, but never were seen out protesting. Now, people realize how serious things are w/Obama and Pelosi out to destroy our country and create a socialist state. I guarantee that for every conservative you saw at the 9/12 march, there are probably 1000 more who feel the same way but didn't/couldn't go.
As far as this article goes, it is way off base. Huckabee and especially Gingrich are out to lunch, neither have the real conservative values or record to get elected. Gingrich aligned himself against Hoffman in the NY race and will be proven wrong! He was typically elitist and arrogant in his remarks that the "conservatives" are making a mistake by supporting Hoffman. He is very wrong. People realize that we have to start from scratch and need to get REAL conservatives in office. If he doesn't win, he will come in a close second. This election is a barometer for the rest of the country. People recognize that the GOP is half the problem. We need to remove RINO's like Olympia Snowe, who is helping the Democrats destroy capitalism and freedom by voting for big government entitlements. She, along with many others, needs to be voted out. removerinos.com and senateconservatives.com are two sites that guide you in supporting candidates that will support and uphold our constitution.

According to Kristol, being typecast as a 'liberal media elite' elicits all manner of negative connotations.Just call your opponant a socialist or liberal, 'nuf said, discussion over. Simply ignore the massive failures of the previous administration, live in an alternative universe, and continue with the right wing policies that led to our current ecomomic decline and foreign entanglement.

Hmmmm. I guess time will tell. I had always considered myself a "moderate" Republican, but after Bush's 1st term I switched parties to Independent. I would love to vote Republican again, but as long as they have party leaders such as Beck and Limbaugh I can't. The Republican Party needs to find a leader and that person is not Sarah Palin, nor Mike Hucabee
