Ford Reports Unexpected $997 Million Profit in Third Quarter

Let's see how the US Autos do without cash for clunkers. Sales fell at an alarmingly huge rate. That can't be good. But like Garry, since the American Taxpayer owns GM and Chrysler, we need to know how badly they screwed us on that union bailout. It was more of a payback for the unions giving the left $400 million in the last two election cycles.

The unions made out like bandits getting half of GM given to them by Obama for nothing but the American Taxpayer sure got it packed in old rear end.

What I want to know is if the $10 billion (that is with a B), for the Auto Unions, still in the latest Lefty Health Care bill, like it was in the previous ones? Thsu is classic lefty pay to play.

what do you think the rest of this country would be like if we hadnt bailed out the banks and Wall street and the car companies. What if we would have just let the invisible hand of the economy work its way through, like Ford did? Almost 1 trillion dollars in profits. Those damn Dems have really screwed us this time. VOTE THE BUMS OUT!!!

The unions are trying to take down ford also, they rejected some proposals and since ford is making a profit they want their share. Just a matter of time before Ford is destroyed by the unions(UAW who is a big benefit of Obamacare) so Obama can take it over. You think Obama is happy the free market is succeeding? he was total control.

Ford also happens to be the only major auto manufacturer. until recently, still run by family. Until recently Ford was still run by the Ford family until Bill Ford turned the reins over to, I believe, Alan Mulaughy.

Why is this significant? The Ford family tended to make decisions with a long term view in mind. This has paid off as Ford has weathered the current recession well.

GM on the other hand has had a LONG LONG series of CEO's whose only concern was profits during their short tenure as CEO. The unions got wise to this and used the start of each new CEO's tenure as an opportunity to squeeze more concessions out of GM. Each new GM CEO, not wanting to start off his tenure with a labor strike, made concessions to the union for short term gain, that in the long term, ultimately bled GM dry.

Honda, Nissan and Toyota cut their distribution costs by moving production to the US. The "imports" hired non union employees at HALF the UAW union scale wages. The "imports" produced EVERY CAR THEY MADE nearly $1,500 cheaper than GM could.

Like GM's CEO's California's short term thinking politicians have for decades made promises to the many to buy short term votes and taxed the rich to pay for them. The long term result??? The rich left California.

The short term thinking California politicians, still making short term promises to the many to buy short term votes, but running out of the rich to pay for those promises, turned to taxing California businesses. California has some of the highest business taxes in the US. The long term result?? California businesses left California for the TAX CUTS surrounding states offered!!
California now has upwards of 15% unemployment, billions in debt, billions more in budget shortfalls and NO TAX BASE LEFT to raise money!!

Now Obama is planning to copy this short term thinking, vote buying political strategy on a national level. California is a petrie dish of far left liberal tax and spend policies that HAVE NOT WORKED!!

California's version of Cap and Trade, AB 32, has resulted in a DOUBLING of electricity rates since AB 32 went into effect in Jan 07. Unemployment in California has rocketed 5 POINTS OVER the national average of 9.8% to over 15% since AB 32 went into effect in Jan 07.

Short term thinking by GM's CEO's and California's politicians slowly bled them to death. Now Obama is copying the short term thinking that was very successful for California politicians but, ultimately, VERY UNSUCCESSFUL for the people of California.

Ford has weathered the storm with family made long term thinking, Until the poor start hiring and handing out paychecks "redistributing the wealth" by "taxing the rich" will buy votes for Obama, but with unemployment at 9.8% and rising our economy, like California's, is slowly bleeding to death.

I missed out on the cash for clunkers when I needed a new truck. I didn't even bother looking at GM. Ford was out of what I wanted so I bought a Toyota.

I am happy for the ford company but l am sad for the United States. Ford has a bio diesel hi bred car that they been selling in England that gets 51 miles per gallon in the city and 74 MPG on the highway. A car like that would generate lots of money to any company.
that car would sell very much like the VW ( Volkswagan) bug sold in the 60's and 70's here in the US. The car salesmen did not have to sell the VW. The car sold it's self. the salesmen just wrote up the order.
Ford has many excusses for not bring the car to us. You need to remember excusses are like bu-t holes, we all have one.

Very likely gatso27 the reason Ford does not sell these cars in the US is it is not cost effective to ship these 12-20K small economy cars to the US and still make a profit.

It is also possible these cars were designed to be built and sold in the UK. Converting these cars to meet US government regulations, on top of shipping costs, MAY make them even more difficult to sell in the competitive US auto market at a profit.

Something as simple as the engines in these cars, while they get great gas milage, may be not meet EPA clean air standards in the US. An engine that meets US EPA standards MAY not mate up with engines mounts in the car or with the UK transmission.

Again since these cars were designed to be built and sold in the UK setting up production facilities and suppliers in the US may take time. It MAY not be cos effective to set up production in the US when this vehicle is scheduled to be redesigned in one two or three years.

Years ago gatso27 Ford built and sold the Escort, billed by Ford as the "World Car".

Building a car to meet different government requirements all over the world takes ALOT of planning.
