Republican Bob McDonnell leads Democrat Creigh Deeds by 56 percent to 42 percent with 2 percent undecided in Public Policy Polling's final survey of the Virginia governor race. The poll was conducted Oct. 30-Nov. 1.

Sixty-three percent of voters said McDonnell made a strong case for why they should vote for him, compared to 34 percent who said that of Deeds.

"The streak of good elections for Democrats in Virginia ends tomorrow," said PPP's Dean Debnam. "Republicans are going to sweep the statewide races and the only real suspense is by how much."

Debnam was referring to Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling's bid for re-election and state Sen. Ken Cuccinelli's run for attorney general.

Republicans have not held the governorship in Virginia since 1997, and Barack Obama stunned them last year by carrying this state, which had typically voted Republican in presidential elections.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
