Washington in 60 Seconds: Christie's Pre-Election Demand: 'Man Up and Call Me Fat!'

Good morning, Capitolists! Election Day is just one day away and the heading-turning high jinks have hit high gear. See below for R's endorsing D's, D's accusing I's of being secret R's, and generous-girthed men demanding to be called fat.

How else could you possibly spend the next 60 seconds?

    * The Story Everyone's Talking About: Bad news for Afghanistan (and Sen. John Kerry) -- Abdullah Abdullah, the candidate challenging President Hamid Karzai to run the country, dropped out of the hastily scheduled runoff election, saying it was a sham. Last week, Kerry triumphantly announced that the runoff would happen to address accusations of voter fraud in the first election, but Karzai has now been declared the winner, according to the BBC.

    * Good Times Back Again? With the AP reporting that Ford Motor Co. made a $1 billion profit in the third quarter (props, Ford!), watch for the White House to focus on the positive in the economy, despite rising unemployment, to prove that the $787 billion stimulus is working. Exhibit A: A White House press advisory for today begins, "As the economy moves beyond crisis to recovery, the President's Economic Recovery Advisory Board will . . . "

    * Dede Goes for the D: After Dede Scozzafava shocked political watchers this weekend by dropping out of the three-way contest for New York's 23rd congressional district, RNC Chairman Michael Steele applauded the Republican's "selfless" act of uniting Republicans to back Doug Hoffman, the conservative in the race. The next day, Mrs. S. endorsed the Democrat.

    * Uncivil Wars in Atlanta Mayor's Race: This contest will be decided tomorrow, and Mary Norwood stands to become the city's first white mayor in more than 30 years. To stop her momentum, opponents have accused the Independent of being a secret Republican, after finding evidence she attended a Republican convention in 1999. Said Norwood at a weekend debate: "We all know that I am not a Republican. We know [the accusations are] a way to divide the city."

    * Forecast in the Senate -- Hot and Cloudy: While Harry Reid's health care bill spends some quality at the CBO getting a cost assessment, the real action this week will be in the Environment and Public Works Committee (Barbara Boxer's panel), where climate change legislation (a.k.a. cap-and-trade) will be hotly debated by moderate and energy-state Democrats, who want major changes before the bill goes anywhere.

    * Health Care Bucket List: The House gavels in at 2 p.m. today, and the clock starts ticking for health care reform. Look for a "managers amendment" today or tomorrow. That's the list of everything some folks wished had been in the bill when it was released on Friday, and that Nancy Pelosi will add this time around to get their votes. For the first time, Democrats say they'll put the amendment online for all the world to see, and will vote on the bill 72 hours later.

    * Just Call Me Fat!: One more day, New Jersey! The election will finally end the slop fight between the governor, Jon Corzine, and his Republican challenger, Chris Christie. After weeks of indirect attacks on his generous girth, Christie challenged the guv last week, saying, "Man up and call me fat!" CNN has the deets, and Garden State, you have our condolences.
