Steny Hoyer: House Health Care Vote May Be Delayed, Abortion Funding Key Sticking Point
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said Friday the vote by the House of Representatives on health care reform, expected to come on Saturday, could slip into next week as conflicts over insurance coverage for illegal immigrants, as well as federal funding for abortion, continue to bog down Democrats' efforts to secure 218 votes for final passage.
Hoyer said it was never the intent of the bill to open the possibility of funding for abortion, and he still does not believe the measure would allow it. "We want to make sure members are comfortable with that reality." On the question of benefits for illegal immigrats, he said, "We want to make sure that undocumented immigrants do not receive federal assistance through this program."
Hoyer said he expects the House will finish its business late Saturday night, but leaders are preparing for the possibility that the vote may come on Monday or Tuesday.
In addition to Hoyer's news of a possible delay, President Obama canceled a trip to Capitol Hill, planned for today to secure final commitments on the bill, to focus on the aftermath of Thursday's shootings at Fort Hood.
Even after the House passes its bill, Hoyer predicted conference-committee work to combine the House and Senate versions will be "relatively lengthy and difficult because of the differences."
Finally, Hoyer warned that continued delay on the bill will only hurt Americans who are struggling to pay for health insurance and health care. "We simply cannot afford not to act," he said.

The DEMS are trying to make the DEATHCARE issue to be over funding of abortions and paying for illegals. Those are two issues, to be sure. But it is the entire concept of government taking over one-sixth of our GDP. This will be death for freedom of choice in this country. Why do you think Obama and his thugs want government to be the only source for college student loans? This will allow the government to steer our kids toward the professions the government thinks we need, will steer them to the college they want them to attend, and will make them totally beholden to the government for years to come. This madness must be stopped. NOW!

when does the first reporter actually say what is happening - the division within the Dem ranks. If there is a divided party, it is the one on the left, the one that has the votes to pass anything but cannot get its act together on health care, mostly because the left wing wants a takeover of that industry and the Dems who've been in business realize that doing so would be a disaster.
Time to quit blaming the Repubs; they were excluded from the process but drafted their own bill anyway, though it will never see the floor either chamber in Congress. This is a wholly-owned debacle of the Democrat Party, from debates over the public option to wrangling over abortion to carping over coverage for illegals.

This bill wouldn't go into effect immediately. How is it going to help anyone now? What a jackssssss. Are we so stupid as to buy into that statement? He presumes we are. The only Americans hurting right now are the ones who want this government to shrivel up and disappear and take this bill and all the others with you.

Any bill 1,000 pages long was written by lawyers and lobbyists, which the Congress is full of.
The biggest thing the Democrats need to back off of is the government control of health care. The government should not be a health care provider. That is not what government was intended to do. The government (local or federal) can't run good transportation, education or mail systems so a system a complex as health care is out of the question.
The government should pass regulations, rules and push forth incentives for good business. In fact, the federal government is better suited as the F.A.A. of health care rather than health care itself.

Why is there such a rush to vote before even an estimate of the cost is submitted? Who the heck are they "representing"? The insurance lobbyists they claim to be "protecting" us from? Look how they have acted to protect us from the Wall Street bubble makers: they covered their losses using borrowed money, and did not backstop unemployment at 8% as promised when the rush-rush porkulus was rammed through.
