California: Race for GOP Senate Nod Tight, Whitman Ahead for Governor

Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina and state assemblyman Chuck DeVore are running neck-and neck for the GOP senate nomination in California, although with a large undecided vote, while former eBay CEO Meg Whitman has an 8 point lead over former Rep. Tom Campbell in the party's race for governor with state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner running way behind, according to a Los Angeles Times/USC poll conducted Oct. 27 - Nov. 3.

In the Senate match-up, Fiorina and DeVore are tied at 27 percent each with 40 percent undecided. In the GOP primary match-up for governor, Whitman leads Campbell 36 percent to 27 percent with 10 percent for Poizner and 23 percent undecided.

Looking at the governor's race from the Democratic side, 65 percent of voters say they need a choice for their party's nominee beyond Attorney General Jerry Brown now that San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has dropped out. Brown has not yet announced a candidacy but led Newsom comfortably in public opinion polls while Newsom was still in the running.

Californians are pessimistic about what a new governor for California will produce. Forty-seven percent say whoever is elected in 2010 will not bring real change to the state while 45 percent say he or she will.
