Kay Bailey Hutchison Will Keep Senate Seat While Running for Governor

Kay Bailey Hutchison says she will hold onto her Senate seat until Texas' gubernatorial primary election in March. She is challenging Gov. Rick Perry in the Lone Star State's Republican primary.

The senator is planning a speech to women in Galveston, Texas, on Saturday when she is expected to say she will step down regardless of who wins the GOP primary, the Houston Chronicle reported. Hutchison had been expected to quit this year but now she says she wants to stick around for Senate debate on health care and global warming legislation.

"I am more determined than ever to become the 48th Governor of the great state of Texas," Hutchison says in remarks that will be delivered to the Texas Federation. "But at the same time I must put what's best for my campaign aside and do what is best for our state. That is why I must stay in the Senate while running for the Republican nomination for Governor."

A Rasmussen survey shows Perry leading Hutchison 46 percent to 35 percent among Republican voters. The same poll found 60 percent of the primary voters thought Hutchison should stay in the Senate while running against Perry, and 26 percent thought she should resign for her run.
