When Tom Tarantino left military service at age 29, he thought he'd have an easy time transitioning into civilian work.
"I assumed I'd have a job in two or three months," he said. "That's what they tell us in the Army."
It's not hard to understand why he was so confident. Tarantino had 10 years of service and several promotions, leaving the Army as a captain in 2007. He had been a platoon leader in Iraq for a year, heading more than 500 mortar missions, investigating local militia leaders and conducting counterinsurgency operations. After being promoted to captain, he was put in charge of a unit of more than 350 soldiers, 160 vehicles, and 600 weapons systems.
But, Tarantino explained, translating all of those qualifications to civilian employers was difficult, a problem experts say contributes to the 11.6 percent unemployment rate among former service members who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
One potential employer asked Tarantino toward the end of an interview if he'd be able to handle the pressure of having 30 people working directly under him.
Tarantino had to suppress his laughter. "I had been leading 30 soldiers in Iraq with bullets flying over our heads," he said. "I think I can do a '9-to-5' running 30 people." Tarantino said he had a tough time explaining his qualifications, and employers had an even harder time understanding them. There was a problem on both ends.
A survey conducted by Military.com, a community Web site for the military and veterans owned by Monster Worldwide, indicates that 61 percent of employers say they don't have a complete understanding of the qualifications of former service members. Three-fourths of veterans said they cannot effectively translate their military experience for civilian employers.
"There are a lot of programs and Web sites out there that deal with translation, but it's almost confusing," Raymond Jefferson, assistant secretary for veterans' employment at the Department of Labor, told a Senate committee hearing this week.
Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, an advocacy group dedicated to improving the lives of veterans, and several other groups think they have found an answer: A Web site that will match veterans' skills with employers' demands, similar to an online dating service.
The Web site will become fully operational in the middle of next year. But Tarantino won't be using it.
It took Tarantino several hundred applications, more than 50 interviews and 10 months, but he landed a job last year -- as a policy advocate for the IAVA.
"It was getting to the point where I was going to have to sell fruit on the side of the road," he said.

Thank god for George Bush.....Liberal dumbasses spend all their energy gnashing their teeth and pulling their hair over him !!!! And continue to wail over why nobody cares to listen to you !!!!!!!You use him as a smoke screen to cover up the incompetence of your Chicago lawyer and his band of progress miscreants . Why dont you just admit you have your hands out waiting for somebody to give you something for nothing and George Bush ignored you! LMAOOOO

There you go again, confusing the issue with facts! The Republicans have converted our military into an expendable "French Foreign Legion." These guys are expected to die, so what's the point in expanding benefits for them. I suspect that Bush's conduct towards the military,is a reflection of his frustration with their repeated failures, and destroying his legacy. Let's face it. Bush repeatedly tried to use the military as a photo-op...a backdrop for his "war on terror." He hand-picked the guys who told him what he wanted to hear, and fired the guys who told him the truth, like Shinseki. As soon as the war took a bad turn, the Republicans started denouncing the critics as traitors, and this took us further down the rabbit hole. Bush and Rumsfeld constantly tried to cover up one military disaster after another, with "feel good" military stories. They used Jessica Lynch, they used Pat Tillman, and they used Predator drone strikes to paint the image that everything was going OK, and covering up suicides, desertions, and failure to meet recruitment goals.

I respect soldiers as much as anyone but what exactly is the difference between Tom Tarantino and the 29-year old civilian laid off from a private sector job? There isn't one. What this story neglects is context, disappointing given that the writer is in what is supposed to be a pretty good grad school for journalists.
The economy is what it is and people going through dozens of interviews before landing a job is the norm for ALL job-seekers, not just those who are ex-military. If you doubt this, quit your job tomorrow and report to us periodically about your job hunt. As previous posts have shown, the net effect of this article is ginned up anger of the Don Quixote variety -liberals continuing to tilt at the George Bush windmill and faux concern over the plight of soldiers from people who can't stand the military in the first place.
To be sure, Tarantino offers a unique skill set and if, as the article states, "translating all of those qualifications to civilian employers was difficult", then private sector HR departments are staffed by the mentally weak. The idea of asking someone who has led troops in combat if he can handle 30 people whose biggest dilemma what wine to have with dinner would be comical if it were not presented with such gravity.
What happened with the captain on his job hunt is a scenario repeated by tens of thousands of regular Joes who remain in limbo. It is not unique to anything and presenting it as though it is a bit disingenuous.

Sadly. this is nothing new. It's happened to soldiers returning from military service ever since the Vietnam Conflict. Today, due to the level of destruction to our economy by our Government it is very bad indeed. Unless your M.O.S. (Military Occupational Speciality) is in a trade or skill that is actually used in civilian life you will need retraining. Been there and done that!

Your post reflects a total ignorance of the realities of the current job market, and the challenges that human resources administrators have. For example, why should a company hire an outsider, with no real practical civilian skills or experience, when they can promote someone from within, for far less money? Many people leaving the miltary have unrealistic salary and benefits expectations If this guy was making $60-$70,000 a year, will he settle for $35,000, with a chance for promotions? Probably not. If he left the military voluntarily (quit), should he expect to jump in front of the line when we're facing 10.2% unemployment? My point? Things are tough all over. Translating the skills he says he has, into hard civilian skills, is almost impossible. The technical and supervisory skills he probably claims he has, are not suitable for the civilian market, and he is facing re-training/re-education.

You are obviously from another planet. As a business owner i would much prefer hiring a vet. They have fewer absent rates, know how to follow directions, can get to work on time, can make smart decisions with little supervision, know how to lead and are generally more mature than there non-vet counterparts. You also dont know about the HR problems of which you speak. Hiring an outsider is usually cheaper than promoting from within. I think putting someone in the front of the line who has risked thier life so some moron like you can post your drivel freely and without persecution is totally appropriate.
Youu are obviously not a vet or a business person (a lib without a job perhaps) or you would know the skills even an infantryman have far outway what is coming out of our schools. In typical Lib fasion, you spout lies about others which really describe yourself. Your post reflects a total ignorance of the realities of the current job market, and the challenges that human resources administrators have not to mention just general lack of knowledge.

did you actually read my post? The whole point was that this article is based on the false premise that only ex-military people are having a tough time in finding jobs.
Your post is in violent agreement with what I was saying - ANY job-seeker is going to have difficulty. You raise a good point re: the soldier's leaving the service - was he forced out due to injury/disability or choose to leave. That would be a good piece of information to have.
As to HR, please. Even you have to admit that it is silly to ask someone who led troops into combat if can handle managing civilians.

goopy, Are you similarly fighting against politicians and commentators who insult citizens who dare express concern with DC's activities, or does you outrage only surface when your ox is being gored? Your use of "brown shirts" is simply vapid but if you insist on attempting to make the connection to either party, look leftward as to which side seeks to stifle debate, which side believes in taking from the achievers to give to the leeches.
Your side believes you are too stupid to make decisions for yourself which is why it wants to tax, regulate, or both virtually everything. Big Nanny means never having to make a decision for yourself, never having to take responsibility for anything, but also being punished for any success you do achieve so that the slackers can have some of your money. Your father would be apalled at your being part of hte modern-day Democrat Party, a party that JFK, FRD, and Truman would not recognize.

They somehow believe, that repeating the BS of Rush, Sean, Bill or Glenn, makes the informed and intellectual, when they can't seem to see, that all of that stuff is just an act, designed to tap into their inner fear and since of helplessness. I will continue to ram the facts up their narrow azzes if they insist on repeating BS that has no basis for the truth. Then having read the truth, and being able to research things for themselves and rejected the truth at least they will have an excuse for remaining ignorant.

This is very important to employ our veterans, but unless we start producing more products here instead of countries like China. We will continue in a Job decline. Its not as easy at it seems but this one fact that people have to understand, because it is not talk about enough. If you want a job? Support local companies that build products right here in the USA.

Just another example of how THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION is Bankrupting the UNITED STATES. OBAMA's Change WE Can believe in has turned into a Disaster we can believe in. He cannot make up his mind to do the right thing in Afghanistan to support our troops and Guantanamo. Yet he speaks with forked tongue, Bailing out Wall Street does not create JOBS, it only solidifies the status quo. Any talk of bringing any troops home will also be a disaster for them because they will ALL wind up HOMELESS. Americans at home are losing their Jobs, their homes and their dignity, let alone what will happen to the returning troops and the impending doom at home? Obama's Stimulus plan should have supported the States to save Jobs and sent stimulus money to the private sector to save and create Jobs. My Wife is a School Teacher, and MANY of her CO workers have been laid off, class size is increasing and Teachers are facing Payroll cuts. This situation shows very clearly that EDUCATION FOR OUR YOUTH and OUR FUTURES doesn't matter to Obama and the Democrats. The right thing to do would be to DEMAND the return of all stimulus money given to Wall Street, Big Banks, Big Business and re-spend that money into the private sector to reverse this disaster created by the Obama Administration. I hate to say it, But WE were better off with BUSH. I am not a Bush supporter nor did I vote for him, BUT AT least he did not bare our asses to the world and create the worlds highest debt for the US. The Obama Administration cannot fix what is broken, for they are broken themselves. This is what America gets for turning blind eyes to Obama's background and his involvement with radical socialists. This is a clear signal to the PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES to vote these incumbents out of office and black list them for the future, THE AMERICAN PEOPLE do not need these types of politicians to represent US. WE need new laws to control our politicians and hold them accountable for their actions or inaction's. Our Politicians are out of control and spending our Tax Dollars like changing underwear and are killing the American Dream. We need to make ALL LOBBYING, PET PROJECTS, and PORK BARREL SPENDING a FELONY. ALL FEDERAL SPENDING should be by PUBLIC REFERENDUM, since it is 0ur money anyway. It's really sad to see what our country has become at the hands of Obama and the Democrats that our returning troops will have nothing to look forward to except Homelessness and poverty after they put their lives on the line for their country...

Are you nine shades of stupid or what? President Obama saved our economy and the world's economy, by bailing out the banks (who will pay back every cent, with interest, and help reduce the debt and deficit) and prevented a panic and a RUN on the banks. Imagine this...every bank, S&L, credit union, and ATM in the country closed tomorrow, and people leaving work to line up at the banks to get their money? It was PREVENTED you dumbazz, by moves the Obama administration made that you can't begin to understand. Nothing in your rant makes any sense. You want the government to stop spending money, but you want to government to provide jobs? How does that work? How do you think government salaries are paid? The debt was already at $7.2 trillion when Obama took over. Where was your outrage then? At least Obama is PAYING for his programs, unlike Bush, who never paid one dime towards the two wars he never finished. Trying to explain simple economics to you, is like teaching quantum physics to a retard. You just don't get it. Your easy answer to what you perceive is wrong is to listen to whatever Beck, Hannity, and Limbaugh tell you...but what they like to leave out, is how it got that way in the first place, and what needs to be done to make sure it doesn't happen again. Additionally, notice how they predict the end of the world because of Obama, but offer no coherent ideas of their own?
