Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele suggested Monday that the GOP is considering a set of guiding principles for the 2010 elections, The Hill reports. While Steele said they would not constitute another "Contract With America" -- the 1994 vision statement spearheaded by Newt Gingrich -- the principles would try to produce a coherent narrative from what has been a bitterly divided Republican message since Barack Obama's election.

"I and Newt and others are looking at how we define this time, a time where we have an administration that's overstepping its reach on health care, overstepping its reach on the economy," Steele said, then adding, "How do we principally make the argument, make the case to the American people that the direction the Obama administration, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid want to go is not good for America?

"I think we'll have some very interesting things to say next year about that," he said.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
