Terry Goddard Leads Jan Brewer in Arizona Governor Race

Arizona Republican Gov. Jan Brewer trails Attorney General Terry Goddard, the likely Democratic nominee, by 47 percent to 28 percent in her bid for re-election, with 4 percent liking neither and 21 percent undecided, according to an Arizona State University/Eight-KAET poll conducted Nov. 19-22.

Because Brewer has been so at odds with fellow Republicans, Rasmussen Reports last week tested Goddard against Joe Arpaio, the Maricopa County Sheriff who has become a controversial figure both in Arizona and nationally for his crackdowns on illegal immigration. Arpaio led Goddard 44 percent to 35 percent in that poll, with 9 percent preferring another candidate and 12 percent undecided. Arpaio has not announced a candidacy, but he has not ruled it out.

ASU/KAET also did a hypothetical match-up of next year's Senate race, pitting John McCain against former Gov. Janet Napolitano, who stepped down to become President Obama's secretary of Homeland Security. McCain leads Napolitano, 50 percent to 41 percent, with 4 percent supporting neither and 5 percent undecided.

A Rasmussen Reports poll conducted Nov. 18 had McCain ahead of former Rep. J.D. Hayworth, now a talk show host, by only 45 percent to 43 percent in a GOP primary, with 6 percent preferring some other candidate and 7 percent undecided. Hayworth has said he is still in the "due diligence" phase of making a decision.
