New Force of Marines Poised to Go to Afghanistan
If President Obama, as expected, announces deployment of additional troops to Afghanistan on Tuesday at West Point, the first out the door will be as many as 9,000 Marines aimed at bolstering a drive against a Taliban stronghold in the southern part of the country that faltered earlier this year, the Washington Post says.

They would be followed by about 1,000 Army trainers to work with Afghan government forces.
The target of the Marines is Helmand province which the Post says has been the focus of U.S. commander Stanley McChrystal and the scene of some of the war's bloodiest fighting. A large force of Marines had earlier this year pushed the Taliban out of several major cities but there were not sufficient forces to dislodge the Taliban from one of their biggest strongholds.
The challenge for the U.S., if the additional infusion of troops produces military success, will be building an effective police force and a government free of corruption, something one military official called a "credibility test" for the Afghan government.

You left out a few key facts. General McKiernan request more troops in September 2008, but Bush turned him down, thinking it might hurt McCain's chances of getting elected. When it was obvious that mccain was going to lose, Bush decided to dump the decision in Obama's lap. President Obama signed the deployment order 0n February 18th 2009, to send 21,000 troops to Afghanistan...one month after he took office, just as he promised he would. McKiernan was fired because he failed to accomplish the mission even with 21,000 more troops. McCrystal bypassed the chain-of-command, and is trying to save his own bacon, by asking for even more troops.

Parallels to Vietnam.Most South Vietmamees troops would not fight because they knew that the American troops would do it.Afganistan troops will not fight very hard and once we leave they will not fight at all.We supported a corrupt government in South Vietnam that the people had no faith in and we are doing the same in Afganistan and the outcome will be the same.We leanered nothing.

The outcome will NOT be the same if America and Russia together
go into Afganistan and finish this war pronto. Russia helped us
in the American Revoultion, WW1 and WW 2 and the rest is history.

If we had not interfered in the Russian intervention in Afghanistan, 9/11 might never have happened, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the Russians we're somehow getting their revenge on us. They lost over 30,000 KIA, and their empire over this war.

Why are we defending our presence in Afghanistan, a country that will never have a government free of corruption? Are we really putting our military in harms way to defend an oil pipeline that runs through Afghanistan? Are we continuing to fight a war we can't win to continue awarding lucrative defense contracts to the giants corporations of the Military Industrial Complex?

My candid opinion to NATO is to concentrate on training of Agfan SOLDIERS to take care of their own security and possibly leave their land for the sake of their Life and that of their people.I do know it might not be expedient for American and others to take it likely,but life is very important and the reputation of NATO member.

It was reported on my local news yesterday that president Bush "missed an opportunity to send thousands of troops" to Afghanistan to capture OBL in Tora Bora. Now President Obama will send 35,000 thousand more troops to Afghanistan.
The obvious implication is more Bush bashing. Obama is placating his anti-war political base by Bush bashing he "inherited" this mess and now must send more troops because Bush "missed" OBL at Tora Bora.
No mention of the FACT the stratagy at the time was a "light footprint" of special ops operations since the mountainous terrain FAVORED al-Qaida.
With just special ops forces in Afghanistan at the time there is NO MENTION of the FACT the "window of opportunity" knowing OBL location in Tora Bora was much SHORTER than the time it would have taken to get "thousands more troops" to Afghanistan and in position to prevent OBL's escape from Tora Bora.
It has not been reported by the media since that we have KNOWN where OBL is so blaming Bush for the "missed opportunity" to get OBL with the light footprint of special ops forces we had in the area at the time is very DISINGENUOUS. NO DOUBT the Obama crew knows the truth. These Obama democrats very likely would have OPPOSED sending more troops to Afghanistan even if it was to get OBL.
Lets be real, sending thousands of troops to Afghanistan would have taken time. One terrorist with a pair of binoculars could have seen them coming and OBL would have said...."WASSSSSSSSUP, I think they know we're here."
Obama can sell this BS story, he is sending more troops to Afghanstan because Bush missing OBL at Tora Bora, because MILLIONS of pinheads voted for Obama's "historic" skin color, 150 days of experience in Washington before running for president and over 100 "present" votes making Obama the most inexperienced president in the past 100 years.
They already bought the Hope and Change BS story so why not sell to the gullible it is Bush's fault he missed OBL in Tora Bora that Obama has to send more troops to Afghanistan.
The far left anti-war group Obama pandered to in defeating Hillary to gain the nomination is now the group he has to placate with 'its Bush's fault".
