Fifty-eight percent of Utah residents say their three-term Republican senator, Robert Bennett, should not get a fourth term. But what might save him is the fact that no strong challengers have emerged, according to a Deseret News/KSL-TV poll conducted Nov. 19-23.

"There is great dissatisfaction among the general public" about Bennett, said pollster Dan Jones. "But right now, nobody is ahead of him," so "if the election were held today, it's still his to lose."

Asked if they wanted to see Bennett re-elected next year, 58 percent said it was time to give someone else a chance, while 27 percent said they support him.

The News said that while conservatives have grumbled that Bennett is not conservative enough, the sentiment to dump him is similar across ideological lines.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
