Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) announced he is directing the staff of the House Homeland Security Committee to prepare subpoenas for Michaele and Tareq Salahi after the couple did not appear at Thursday's committee hearing on last week's White House security breach.

Thompson, chairman of the committee, said the Salahis will be subject to contempt of Congress charges if they continue to refuse to speak to his committee and added, "I hope they will be as willing to talk to Congress as they have been to talk to media."

Despite a request from the committee's top Republican, Rep. Peter King of New York, to issue a similar subpoena for White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers, Thompson said he will not issue a subpoena for her.

Although Rogers also declined to testify at Thursday's hearing, Thompson said that Rogers is not involved in the security of the White House. Because the purpose of the hearing was to investigate security matters there, and because Rogers will be busy entertaining at the White House during the holiday season, Thompson said he would not compel her to appear before the committee.
