The U.S. economy shed only 11,000 jobs in November, less than 10 percent of the predicted number, CNN Money reports. By comparison, job losses numbered 139,000 in September and 111,000 in October after initial numbers were revised for accuracy. The overall unemployment rate dropped from 10.2 percent to 10.0 percent in November, the first time it has fallen in the 13 months since the recession began.

Countering the positive news, however, long-term employment statistics looked bleaker in November than ever: a record 5.9 million people have been out of work for more than six months. Another 9.2 million have found only part-time work and are still looking for full-time jobs.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
