Sen Max Baucus yesterday defended his decision to recommend his girlfriend, lawyer Melodee Hanes, for a U.S. Attorney post in his home state of Montana, saying she was particularly qualified for the job after handling more than 100 jury trials and that he did not want their relationship to disqualify her, The Hill reports.

Baucus also dismissed the use of "affair" to describe their relationship since both he and Hanes had long been separated from their partners before they started dating.
Baucus had nominated Hanes in March but he and Hanes decided later to withdraw the nomination because they hoped to live together.
On Friday, when the news of Baucus' recommendation broke, some Republicans had called for an ethics committee investigation into Baucus' relationship with Hanes, who had worked for Baucus' campaign and later his Senate staff.

I am from Montana and Baucus's days are numbered. There are many qualified people out there that qualify for this job, but do they get a chance. It is no different than Obama putting in all of his cronies from Chicago in to high paying positions in the White house or just making up positions so as to give his friends jobs. Why does one have to be a girlfriend or lover to a member of congress to get a job?

I thinking there are a lot of Democrats that will be looking for jobs after the voters give them the boot. These politicians have more balls than any other people, apparently they think the voters aren't watching what's going on.

Had baucus been a Republican or Independent it would have been mentioned at least 12 times in this short article.
Baucus is another dem. Senator the democratic controlled Ethics Committee will not investigate.
This is but another example of an administration that does not believe in honesty in their own ranks.

Or, perhaps it's just another case of a democrat party member on his way out who wants to install another leftist to a position in the bureaucracy, in line for a judicial appointment. Load the legal system with liberals, and rule without mandate, make law without congressional or pesky Constitutional "interference"...

after viewing his photo, he would HAVE to come up with SOMETHING pretty darn spactacular....yikes....but gee, how about a nice corporation or stocks and bonds....our government is already under attack, and we are feverishly trying to get rid of bogus people as fast as we can ALREADY...

even if this woman is, bar none, the best candidate for the job, can this guy not see the inherent conflict? Americans already think politicians of both parties are there to serve themselves and their friends; this does not help.

Regardless of her qualifications, he should not have nominated her. If she is worthy of the position, let someone else do it. I am so unbelievably ready for a hit list of sleazy politicians it is not funny. Complaining does not work. Perhaps a hit list will.

If Baucus thought even thought she was qualified for this position then why did he date her to start with? If she had aspirations for this position then why did she date him? They want us to believe there is no vested interest for the both of them in this situation other than the most qualified for the job and the best for the state.
