While Praising Palin, McCain Calls Her 'Irrelevant'

In the midst of lavishing praise on his former running mate Sunday, Sen. John McCain said Sarah Palin is "irrelevant." In an interview with NBC's David Gregory on "Meet the Press," McCain came to Palin's defense, saying she is "what the Republican Party needs to regain power in the midterms and ultimately in 2012." He also said he continues to have a "wonderful relationship" with her and that he enjoyed her book in spite of the negative things it has to say about his campaign.

But while he was handing out high praise, McCain wedged in what could be interpreted as a jab at Palin.

"I am entertained every time I see these people attack her and attack her and attack her. She's irrelevant, but they continue to attack her. I am so proud of her and the work that she is doing," McCain said.

A McCain spokesman later said the senator meant that the media believes her to be irrelevant.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
