The race for the Republican nod in Kansas to succeed retiring Sen. Sam Brownback is knotted up, with seven-term Rep. Jerry Moran leading eight-term Rep. Todd Tiahrt 37 percent to 34 percent with 29 percent undecided, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted Dec. 4-6. The margin of error is 4.6 points.

Brownback is not running because he is honoring a pledge not to serve more than two terms.

Moran's biggest edge is among self-described moderates (30 percent of the sample) where he leads 46 percent to 25 percent with 29 percent undecided. Tiahrt leads 40 percent to 33 percent among conservatives (57 percent of the sample), with 26 percent undecided. They run about evenly among liberals (8 percent of the sample).

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
