ABC News is expected to announce that it is promoting Washington correspondent George Stephanopoulos to replace Diane Sawyer as host of "Good Morning America," Politico reports. Sawyer will anchor her last edition of the lucrative morning program on Friday, and Stephanopoulos could start as early as next week.

The former senior adviser to President Clinton will continue presiding over his Sunday program, "This Week," during a transition period, as the network is wary of losing its audience share with a sudden change. A replacement will be named later.
