Capitol Hill Bureau Chief
Tally ho, Capitolists! After we watched Harry Reid try to make a deal on health care from our seats in the Capitol grandstand last night, we listened to him compare passing health reform to muddy horse racing. "This is like a steeplechase race," he said. "The last big puddle is in front of us." Really? We thought it looked more like herding cats or making sausage, but any messy metaphor will do.
That sloppiness continues on the Hill this morning, and here's everything else that's making news in Washington today:
*
Dysfunctional Family Reunion. Democratic senators head to the White House this afternoon to meet with President Obama on health reform, but they should probably skip the hostess gifts and small talk, because the mood is expected to be less than festive.
Sen. Jay Rockefeller told The Capitolist last night, "It isn't going to be a pep rally, and that's a good thing."
* Capitol Christmas Tea Party. Speaking of dysfunctional families, the Tea Party Patriots will be on Capitol Hill today to dial 9-1-1 on health care. The small-government, high-volume activists are planning a "die in" on the Hill to "present an image of desperately ill patients waiting in long lines for treatment at government-controlled health care facilities."
*
Nancy Pelosi for Person of the Year? Time magazine said definitely maybe yesterday as it announced the finalists for the magazine's iconic cover award. Pelosi joins Barack Obama, Stanley McChrystal and "the Chinese worker" on the list of possible winners. Look for a final announcement tomorrow.

Detainees From Guantanamo to the Melon Capital. Lynn Sweet
reports that the White House today will announce it is moving detainees from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to a mostly empty maximum security prison in Thomson, Ill. Local officials promised jobs for the tiny town of 550, which currently calls itself "the Melon Capital of the World," but will soon be known as "Gitmo in the Snow."

Joe Wilson's a Britney Fan, No Lie! Our favorite soft-talking-but-outburst-prone congressman,
Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.), spoke with
Politico's Anne Schroeder Mullins for her "Get to Know . . ." feature recently. From the mini-exposè, we learn Wilson wants to meet Sarah Palin, that he would go to a Britney Spears concert, and that he is definitely not ready to joke about calling the president a liar during a joint session of Congress. Maybe next time?
