While Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter holds a big lead over his Democratic primary challenger, Rep. Joe Sestak, he is locked in a dead-even race with former Republican Rep. Pat Toomey in a general election match-up, according to a Quinnipiac University poll conducted Dec. 8-14.

Specter leads Sestak 53 percent to 30 percent with 16 percent undecided. In October, Specter's lead was 44 percent to 25 percent, with 28 percent undecided.

When it comes to the general election, Specter and Toomey are at 44 percent each with 8 percent undecided. They have been within a point of each other in this poll since July. Both men get equal levels of support from voters in their own parties, but Toomey leads among independents by 44 percent to 36 percent, with 18 percent undecided.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
