'Botox Tax' Out, 'Tan Tax' In New Senate Health Bill

Goodbye Bo-tax, hello Tan Tax.

In the new package of changes to the health reform bill released Saturday morning, Senate leaders have cut out the much-discussed five-percent tax on elective cosmetic surgery, known as the Botox-tax. In its place, the bill will add a 10-percent tax on indoor tanning. According to the language in the bill, the tax would apply to golden glows that come from tanning beds that deliver UV radiation, not spray tans, and will come out of your pocket when you pay for your fresh-from-the-beach look.

The only good news for tanners is that the tax becomes effective on July 1, 2010, so fake sun seekers have the entire winter to enjoy the last round of tax-free tans.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
