The bump in support for the war in Afghanistan that occurred after President Obama's speech at West Point Dec. 1 laying out his new strategy has faded although the percentage of those who approve of Obama's handling of the conflict improved slightly, according to a Quinnipiac University poll conducted Dec. 15-20.

Fifty-one percent say fighting the war in Afghanistan is the right thing to do compared to 41 percent who oppose U.S. involvement, with 8 percent undecided. That's down from the 57 percent to 35 percent approval margin Quinnipiac reported on Dec. 8. Sixty-eight percent of Republicans say the U.S. is doing the right thing as do 51 percent of independents. Fifty-two percent of Democrats oppose being involved.

Voters approve of Obama's handling of Afghanistan by 47 percent to 43 percent with 10 percent undecided. Earlier this month, they were split at 45 percent each.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
